This was my first move into a diesel truck. I will never again own a gas pickup after having this. The power that this provides when towing or just driving is amazing. I can beat most other vehicles, including fast cars, off the line. It's an automatic, and I can squeal the tires from a stop if I try. The vehicle currently has almost 190,000 miles on it and still runs very strong. We've done maybe $3,000 worth of work on it in the past seven years or so, but it's been very reliable. Preventative work is a must to save you big bucks.
Story
Towing a camper to hunting camp we got into some mud and clay. Put it in 4wd and it powered right through it even towing that fully loaded 26' camper!
Pros
The power is number one for sure. The ride is comfy and 4wd has helped many times. The interior is comfy and provides many of the normal things you would expect a car to. The added protection of being in a large vehicle while driving down the highway is a good piece of mind as well. Mileage is also better than a gas vehicle, especially when towing.
Cons
The ride is a bit loud. It's a diesel, so don't expect it to be quiet. Repairs can be costly if you can't do them yourself, and even then parts can be expensive. Starting it when it's really cold out takes a while to warm up. I have a block heater, so plugging it in or keeping it in the garage will help a bunch.

I love the reliable transmission, extended truck bed and crew cab in my 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 HD. The engine has never conked out after 160,000-plus miles. Attending to regular service intervals and oil changes have kept this truck running in perfectly smooth shape. There have been some issues with deteriorating exterior trim, a recall related to the fuel delivery system and a 3-time repeat issue with a rear door lock mechanism not functioning.
Pros
The 8-foot long extended truck bed is one of the most convenient features about this truck. I have carried many loads of mulch, furniture and even motorcycles secured in the back of my GMC Sierra than seems possible. The truck bed has a huge capacity and the wheel wells are situated to take up the least amount of bed space.
Cons
Within a few years of purchasing this vehicle new, decals on both sides of the truck had to be replaced. Although they were provided under warranty, once the warranty ran out, they needed to be replaced again and I chose not to spend the money. The front grill is very cheap plastic and has a silver metallic coating that has been peeling for years. Rear door mechanism has been replaced three times and still surprises me with the occasional "lock out" at the most inconvenient times.
