2003 GMC Yukon XL - My Yukon
My Yukon is a 2003 model. We bought it used with 215,000 miles on it. We wanted this vehicle to pull our boat and be able to take guests with us to the lake, etc. The interior is leather and the driver and passenger seats are splitting on the edges, which I believe is pretty typical for the Yukon and Suburban counterpart. I love the roominess and being "up" high. At about 225,000 miles, the transmission went out and the transmission specialist said he was surprised it hadn't gone out sooner. Evidently another typical thing that happens with this vehicle. We had it fixed and haven't had any problems since. The exterior has started to rust in a few places, but that's probably pretty typical with the age of the vehicle. All in all, no real complaints about the performance. It is a safe, c... (more)

It is a safe, comfortable and reliable vehicle. We drove it to Colorado last year without incident. We even make a makeshift bed in the back so we could take turns sleeping! We enjoy yard sales and recently went to a "miles long" sale. There isn't much we can't fit into the back of our Yukon. This is the third Suburban/Yukon we have owned and would most definitely buy another one.
Our "fun" is boating. We love having our big vehicle and being able to take friends to the lake with us.

2016 GMC Yukon XL - I am more than satisfied with our decision to purchase this vehicle.
The 2016 GMC Yukon XL is built very well. We really like the design of the body, especially for being a bigger vehicle. The headlights are sleek and give the front end a sportier and classier look. There is more than enough space in the back to store our luggage when we go on a trip. The front seats add a touch of luxury because they offer the heated option and the air conditioning through the seats option. We enjoy and frequently use both of these options. The stereo is nice and provide a good, quality sound. The sensor lights for your blind spot on the side mirrors is a nice safety feature that has bailed me out a time or two. In addition, we like the front sensors that tell us how close we are to another vehicle when parking in a parking lot. Also, the back-up camera is sup... (more)

Also, the back-up camera is super helpful when trying to reverse out of a parking space in a large parking lot. It allows us to see how close our back bumper is coming to the parked vehicle behind us. The steering wheel can be heated, which is nice. I would say one thing that could be improved is the power of the acceleration.
We are a family of six people. My wife, my four children and myself. Flying can be expensive, so we try to take as many road trips as possible to help cut costs. While many families dread the ten-hour road trips to the Midwest, my wife and I actually enjoy them very much. With four children that are very active and very vocal, it is difficult to get in some quality spouse time where we can just talk. Having a GMC Yukon XL allows us to load up a bunch of luggage in the back without losing seating or floor space so that we can take out on a long road trip with the kids. Being that the Yukon XL is extremely big, the kids aren't fighting with each other over space ("quit touching me! get your leg off of me...it's sweaty!"). The kids are spread out and have plenty of room. Once we hit the interstate, we put a movie on that they all will watch. This quiets them down and allows my wife and I's minds to settle down so that her and I can just talk...about everything and nothing. It is a great feeling, and I really look forward to these longer road trips where I can just hold her hand and have an adult conversation.
One of my favorite features is the back-up camera. The Yukon XL is a large vehicle, and the back-up camera allows us to see what, or who, is behind us to avoid and accident. The front parking sensors are great, also. We rely on these when we are parking our car in a parking lot and for when we are parking our car in the garage. The heated seats are great in the winter. The air conditioning feature is great for in the summer. The steering wheel is heated, which I don't use much, but my wife seems to like it in the winter time. The touchscreen stereo system is a nice-size display and is easy to navigate through. When driving, we like having the controls on the driving wheel for safety reasons. Also, the Bluetooth technology is great and is nice to have when receiving phone calls while driving. We like the electronic tailgate option. The best part about this is that we can stop the tailgate at any point along the way while it is going up. We like this option because if we allow the tailgate to open up all the way when it is parked in our garage, then it will hit the garage door...maybe not causing damage to the garage door, but I believe that would eventually scratch up the Yukon's tailgate.
With all bigger vehicles, two things come to mind. How is the gas mileage and how is the acceleration when trying to come out of your neighborhood or when trying to get onto the highway/interstate? I would say that the gas mileage is not terrible for a bigger vehicle, but I would always love to see a bigger vehicle keep its expected power but increase its ability to accelerate. The folks over at GMC could figured out a way to help increase the gas mileage without decreasing the power. So, that is one "negative" thing I have about this vehicle. Another "negative" thing about this vehicle is that I would prefer a little more power/acceleration when coming out of my neighborhood onto the busy street. From a concern for safety, you pull out of your neighborhood and think you have enough time, but the oncoming car actually speeds up to teach you a lesson...so it would be nice to be able to "counter" the oncoming car's "speeding up to teach you a lesson and then laying on their horn at you" with the ability to accelerate faster so you can avoid the oncoming car's "speed up and honk" lesson and so that you can better adjust to your own miscalculations of the speed of oncoming traffic...the idea here would to have a little extra horsepower to avoid a traffic accident.

I like that when I need more power and acceleration that the engine is more than ready and willing to perform. While its not exactly worth the fuel economy the engine on the upgraded package definitely isn't undersized for this size of vehicle. Straight away I did notice the transmission didn't seem responsive like it should be, especially in comparison to the engine's performance. Rough or borderline feeling like it is straight dropping to the next gear when pushed to perform isn't ideal. I have taken good care of this SUV and haven't put a lot of stress on it driving. It currently has 35,000 miles. Ever since three months into my purchase of it, I've been disappointed at the quality of the parts it was built with. It's not like the GMCs I remember from decades ago. The parts visually showed wear quickly. As time has gone on, I've noticed things that should not appear to be worn looking dull, broken or in need of repair. Cosmetic as well as mechanical. Things like the interior aside from the leather and carpeting looking dull. The rotors being rusted at three months is what I first frowned upon. Then as I inspected the underbody and under the hood, I found even more visual rust. I thought to myself: This isn't a luxury standard, this isn't an American product standard either. The fuel economy isn't good. I average 14 MPG around town. If I'm lucky I get 17 MPG on the highway. I didn't expect the fuel economy to be excellent though. The SUV is mostly comfortable to drive and is decently comfortable as a passenger even in the third row. It's big enough to fit my toddler, my two extra large dogs and enough luggage for two adults plus a two year old with room to spare though!
It was memorable when I drove out to a lake in my GMC. It was nighttime, and while the headlights on high beam didn't illuminate my path as well as I'd have liked, the truck easily passed over the sandy terrain to my parking spot by the water. I liked the leather on the seats seemed to improve as time went on, and it never lost its color even after being parked outside in a sunny driveway for years.

Early onset of rust. Visually showing up after three months on new parts such as the rotors and inside the engine compartment. The cost of repair and replacement of cosmetic and/or mechanical parts is extremely high in respect to it not being a luxury brand and definitely not appearing as if it were manufactured with the same quality standards as my previous SUVs that were an Audi and an Infiniti.
