2005 Jeep Liberty - Not as reliable as I'd expect from Jeep.

We purchased this vehicle because we had to. We had traveled out of state helping family move, and the only vehicle available broke down to the point where it was unsafe and needed to be scrapped. We were forced to acquire a vehicle so we could continue the trip and make it home. This was the only thing we could afford with our financing options at the time. Jeep was a trusted brand, so we thought we would try it out. It performed well enough getting us home, but has had many maintenance problems in the last few years from neglect or abuse by the previous owners. This is not a vehicle we trust to go out of town very often, and since we live in rural Wyoming going out of town means at least a 2 hour trip in any direction. It has completely broken down to the point of needing to be towed... (more)
Story
There are a lot of dirt roads in our town, and once when driving with the family I took an alternate route down a bumpy road that some vehicle's might not have been able to navigate. The children especially enjoyed the detour.
Pros
The four-wheel drive is a must in our area. Even with it, we spin out in the winter time due to extremely poor road maintenance in our town. The A/C and heat still work most of the time, and the full-size spare trademark to a Jeep is a plus. It also gets fairly good gas mileage due to its small size.
Cons
The transmission has been the source of a lot of trouble. The lines broke twice on us leaving us stranded over 30 miles outside of town. A couple times it wouldn't leave four-wheel drive and we have never figured out why. The rear wiper recently stopped working due to some electrical issue that would take a lot of time and/or money to chase down. There is a coolant leak which causes our heat to stop working now and then in the winter. I was disappointed when we purchased the vehicle to learn it did not have cruise control since that was one of the features I was specifically looking for.

I love the Jeep Liberty LTD. It is a quiet vehicle inside, has no rattles, and it rides quite smooth. It has ample enough storage space in the back, and even more if you fold the seats down, for larger items. I love the 4 wheel drive, which is easy to engage and use. It has superior performance on wet roads, and more than decent gas mileage. The fog lights are a great help, especially where I live, as we have a lot of fog. It's a great vehicle to take on vacation, and one that my Great Pyrenees dogs love to ride in! The safety restraints are adjustable, which is nice for my husband who is a taller man. I also love the factory installed stereo system, with 6 CD disc changer. The sound system is amazing, compared to our last vehicle. The only complaint that I have about this vehicle woul... (more)
Story
We took a short road trip to Mohican State Park, spur of the moment, bought alot of things at little roadside stands, then decided to take it a little off road. Our fruit and veggies, didn't fare so well. Lol
Pros
Quiet and smooth ride. The 4 wheel drive. Spare tire conveniently located.
Cons
You cannot take turns too fast as it has a short wheel base. Lack of trunk access from inside the vehicle.
