2005 Jeep Liberty - Not as reliable as I'd expect from Jeep.

We purchased this vehicle because we had to. We had traveled out of state helping family move, and the only vehicle available broke down to the point where it was unsafe and needed to be scrapped. We were forced to acquire a vehicle so we could continue the trip and make it home. This was the only thing we could afford with our financing options at the time. Jeep was a trusted brand, so we thought we would try it out. It performed well enough getting us home, but has had many maintenance problems in the last few years from neglect or abuse by the previous owners. This is not a vehicle we trust to go out of town very often, and since we live in rural Wyoming going out of town means at least a 2 hour trip in any direction. It has completely broken down to the point of needing to be towed... (more)
Story
There are a lot of dirt roads in our town, and once when driving with the family I took an alternate route down a bumpy road that some vehicle's might not have been able to navigate. The children especially enjoyed the detour.
Pros
The four-wheel drive is a must in our area. Even with it, we spin out in the winter time due to extremely poor road maintenance in our town. The A/C and heat still work most of the time, and the full-size spare trademark to a Jeep is a plus. It also gets fairly good gas mileage due to its small size.
Cons
The transmission has been the source of a lot of trouble. The lines broke twice on us leaving us stranded over 30 miles outside of town. A couple times it wouldn't leave four-wheel drive and we have never figured out why. The rear wiper recently stopped working due to some electrical issue that would take a lot of time and/or money to chase down. There is a coolant leak which causes our heat to stop working now and then in the winter. I was disappointed when we purchased the vehicle to learn it did not have cruise control since that was one of the features I was specifically looking for.

2005 Jeep Liberty - The Jeep is the best for dependability

This Jeep is so reliable. It was four-wheel drive and has completely cured my anxiety about driving during the wintertime. It is sturdy, and I feel safe in it. It has a rugged quality that makes me feel adventurous, and I like how I feel when I drive in it. The Jeep has been very dependable and has never broken down, so maintenance costs have been very minimal. I have only had to do a few oil changes and replacement of the windshield wipers.
Story
We once took it hiking, and as we were slowly navigating the terrain, a baby moose popped out in front of the vehicle. We got to watch it move past us; however, we quickly moved on so we didn't run into the mommy moose!
Pros
Four-wheel drive is by far the best feature. I can drive around with more confidence during the winter snow and ice. I feel very safe in the vehicle. The room in the backseat is huge. I am able to put the seats down and fit two bikes in there. I like this feature because I do not trust others in taking my bike if I had it on a bike rack outside of the car. I like the back hatch that can open up and let my dog look out the back of the car. I can choose to open just that part of the Jeep. The Jeep is also very rugged. I have been able to take it hiking and on back woods with ease.
Cons
Due to having the base model, the speaker system is not the best. The sound quality is bad compared to other cars. The upholstery picks up dog hair like crazy and I have to constantly clean it.
