1998 Subaru Forester - Subaru Forester - The Perfect All Around Vehicle
My Subaru Forester is an excellent car! Not only is it reliable and practical, but it is the perfect car for weekend adventures. The AWD makes it possible to tackle steep dirt roads in order to get to that perfect campsite. Plus, it has a surprising amount of storage space when you fold down the back two seats. This is the perfect car if you need a little bit of everything: reliability, ruggedness, storage space, and economy.
Story
My wife and I took our Subaru camping at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was a really fun trip, however it started pouring rain while we were there. We were very thankful to have Subaru's AWD so that we could make it out through the muddy backroads.
Pros
- Overall reliability is one of the top pros for the Subaru Forester. I drove it for nearly 200,000 miles and only had to do routine maintenance.
- Safety is another pro. With Subaru's impressive AWD, you will have much better traction in wet and snowy conditions.
- The Subaru Forester has an impressive amount of storage space. If we are going camping for the weekend, it's easy to fit 4 people, luggage, and camping gear in the back.
- The AWD makes it possible to tackle just about any terrain. Whether you're trying to get over an icy mountain pass or up a steep dirt road, the Forester w... (more)
Cons
- Because of its AWD, the Subaru Forester gets lackluster fuel economy for such a small car. I typically only get about 23 mpg, when a similar sized car without AWD would get much closer to 30 mpg.
- Because of the short wheelbase, the back seats do not have much legroom. This makes it a cramped ride if you need to carry more than 2 adults.
- The head gaskets on old Subaru engines are notoriously fickle. We had to replace the head gaskets on our engine, and that is a very expensive repair.
2007 Subaru Forester - Most reliable and fantastic car
The Subaru Forester is the best car I have ever owned. A smooth ride to say the least, do not let its small frame fool you. It never breaks down, can keep up in its speed, and is an absolute joy to drive. A classic for sure. My favorite car forever!
Story
This car has withstood city driving for seven years and three cross-country road trips... It is the ultimate, versatile vehicle!
Pros
The Subaru Forester fits into compact parking spaces while still maintaining the proportions of an SUV so it has the feel and drive of a larger, more powerful car. The interior is beautiful, the stereo loud and clear, and the trunk incredibly spacious for those cross country road trips.
Cons
For me personally, there were no cons regarding the Subaru Forester. it has fit my personal driving needs and I can't imagine needing anything more. However, if I needed a car to accommodate more than five people (thus, another layer of seats), this car would not accommodate such a request. Similarly, though this car can fit in a "compact" space while being a "mini-SUV", it is not a convertible/Smart-car or another type of really tiny car, if that is what you are looking for.

I liked it because of its proximity to my hometown and they had competitive prices.
