2000 Subaru Outback Owner Ratings & Reviews

2000 Subaru Outback - Dependable AWD vehicle with good gas mileage
The vehicle has been a dependable AWD with good highway and inner city gasoline mileage. The car feels very roomy and my 6'3" husband can drive it comfortably. The head gasket is known to have problems around 100k - 150k miles, but getting this issue fixed when the time comes will allow for many more miles to be put on the car.
Story
We purchased a used china cabinet and since it wouldn't fit inside the vehicle due to the width, we strapped it to the roof while the prior owners watched us in shock. The cabinet made it home just fine without a single scratch on the glass.
Pros
Living in a big city means there is a potential for a lot of driving, so having a vehicle that gets good gas mileage and yet you can still take out on back roads for camping is fantastic. Larger items can be hauled inside the vehicle or even strapped to the roof rack.
Cons
The look of the station wagon reminds me of something my grandparents would drive. The head gasket issue will have to be fixed around 100k-150k miles.
2000 Subaru Outback - Very reliable vehicle
I have owned my Outback for about three years now. Thus far I have not had many problems with this older model vehicle. I love the amount of cargo space and storage in this car. I bought the car with around 175,000 miles on it, and now I am at 205,000 and still going strong. I have had to repair and replace a couple items but nothing too expensive. I have a young child, and this vehicle has plenty of room for him and all the items we haul around with us for trips and sports. Camping is great with this vehicle, because I can fit all of our gear in the back and know that I can rely on my car to get me where I am going. The gas mileage for this vehicle is average and affordable. I believe that I usually get about 25-30 miles to the gallon, and it typically costs me less than $30 to fill... (more)
Story
Packing all of our camping gear, filling the entire car from front to back, and driving to a new place we had never been. We had a blast and thought it was hilarious that we had managed to pack the vehicle so full. We even took photos of my son, in his car seat, surrounded by camping gear.
Pros
I love the stylish interior, cargo space, and reliability of this vehicle. I love being able to fit all my gear and groceries in the large trunk area.
Cons
Light-colored interior and small leg room in the rear seats are really the only negatives I have at this point.
