After having driven the 2001 Toyota 4Runner for over 215,000 miles, I can say it has been one of the most dependable vehicles I have ever owned. The interior is basic but has held up to constant daily wear and tear from moving furniture, commuting to work and carrying golf clubs. There have been a few major repairs such as replacing the timing component, U-Joints, and radiator, but given the total mileage, it has been a good cost-effective vehicle that makes very few demands upon the owner in terms of maintenance.
Story
After hydroplaning on an interstate off-ramp through a road sign and down a hill, I had to make some wheel and front bumper repairs, and the vehicle drove good as new as if it had never happened.
Pros
Dependability and construction quality, plenty of storage space even when seating 4-5 people. The back hatch makes it easy to fit large items in the back space. After multiple bumps, scrapes, and other damaging activities and subsequent repairs, the vehicle has held up remarkably well as many early 2000s Toyota vehicles often do. With over 215,000 miles, I plan on driving it for up to another 60,000 miles/5 years and fully expect it to achieve that goal.
Cons
Gas mileage of 19-20 MPG, which can be tough on people who commute 25-30 minutes one way each day.

The 2001 4Runner was by far the best vehicle I've ever owned. It was reliable, tough and fun. It would go through snow and mud like nobody's business. Also, with the sunroof and really spacious storage in the back, it was a fun family car. I never had many issues at all except for standard maintenance and I drove it a lot. I used it for my business as well and carried around everything from computers to tools. I really loved that vehicle and would recommend one to anyone.
Story
Not really... had a blast driving it thogh.
Pros
My favorite features were the 4 wheel drive, the sunroof and the spacious back end. The car was really cool looking too... for those of you that are SUV fans. Then there was the Toyota reliability. I had very few issues beyond the standard maintenance stuff and I had put on a lot of miles. It also had 67,000 when I bought it.
Cons
Probably the biggest con was the gas mileage... it's an SUV. 17 - 18 city was to be expected. The other thing I found out was that the chrome bumpers had a habit of collecting moisture and corroding after a few years. I did have to replace the front bumper after having it a year or so but fortunately it didn't end up costing that much.
