This minivan is basically a Chrysler minivan with a Volkswagen logo on it. They did not tell us that when we bought it. In terms of the interior, it is a nice van, leather seats, two screen DVD player, navigation, rear view camera. Inside it is a nice van. If you have children you cannot beat the entertainment system, the storage space, and the sheer size of this vehicle. However, the car has had more mechanical and structural problems than I can remember. The engine light has yielded two costly engine repairs. At 85K miles, it has had two sets of brakes and rotors, a suspension repair, and other costly fixes.
Story
That would be when we went to change the tire, and the tire removal tool (to release the spare tire) which is made of plastic snapped. I had to walk in the rain to a gas station to buy pliers to get the damn thing out. That was fun... NOT
Pros
The interior. The car is comfortable for travel, and easily holds 6-7 passengers. We have three kids, and it has been a lifesaver in space/capacity. There are several under seat/floor storage areas that hold a great deal of stuff. The rear seats fold down in two different positions, and the middle seats can be completely removed. The DVD package is a must for young kids and traveling.
Cons
The structure and mechanics of the van. We have had two tire blowouts on this van in 85K miles. The reason was the tire pressure monitor (TPM) system is attached to metal tire stems, which corrode over time, and snap, while driving, and quickly deflate the tire. VW says this is not a warranty items, and offered no coverage. They cost $140 to replace, or you can opt, like us, to replace with a rubber valve stem, to avoid the same problem, but you lose your TPMS. The brakes are horrible, and the rotor system for the brakes causes you to need new brakes far too often. Mechanics both said that... (more)

The VW Routan is not up to par with the typical VW car. Our minivan has had several things go wrong in the four years we have owned it, including costly EGR replacement and an entire circuit board replacement, totaling over $2,000 for those two alone. Add in poor braking system that requires brake replacements every 20K miles and rotors every 30K miles and you will spend more money than you bargained for on this minivan!
Story
Having the radiator hoses come loose and cause black billowing smoke to come from the engine as radiator fluid was shot all over the place.
Pros
This is practically identical to a Chrysler Town and Country. It is spacious, practical for families with children, and comes with many great amenities. The automatic sliding doors are a life save with young children, and the rear entertainment system is a nice addition. The storage is plentiful, including under foot storage compartments and rear, stow-and-go seating. It includes a back up camera, GPS system, and heated seats, which the parents will enjoy while driving in the winter.
Cons
The maintenance costs on this minivan are far worse than any other minivan out there. TPMs are connected to the tire stem, and break easily, causing your tire to flatten immediately. This happened twice while driving, nearly causing an accident. In 100,000 miles, it has required four front and three rear brake replacements, three sets of rotors, an entire circuit board, six TMP's, EGR system, radiator, and many other minor repairs. I have spent over $8,000 on maintenance more than twice what I have spent on my other car with 150K miles.
