I like that this car was able to last through various weather conditions and still do well: from the Alaska snow where I purchased it to the hot Texas and California sun and all the way across the ocean to Germany and back. It is quite durable but doesn't have a lot of power due to the two-cylinder engine. It is not automatic anything. I had to install an alarm system when it was broken into. What I do like is it is hard to steal since it is an older model. People will not drive off with the vehicle. I had several problems over the years that have been taken care of now; for instance, the engine starter was recalled, and it would just stop in the middle of traffic, which was quite dangerous. Also, the dash near the front window had to be replaced several times. The plastic just keeps c... (more)
Story
I took my vehicle up a hill in Alaska, and a few of us had a memorable time looking at the Northern Lights. I have so many memories with this vehicle during my time in the military.
Pros
My favorite features about the vehicle is that I never had a problem getting it started due to different weather conditions hot or cold. I like that it is lower to the ground, so it can cut through traffic and high wind areas in California. I like that it is small but still has a lot of trunk space for several suit cases and gear. I like that because it's an older vehicle, it is quite hard to steal because of the wiring. Even though my car was broken into, they were not able to take the vehicle.
Cons
It takes a long time to warm up in the winter but did quite well in snow conditions...some of the cloth and plastic near the front window is not made to be very durable at all. I had to get the A/C fixed, seatbelt plastic, radio, starter and airbag were recalled due to safety issues. I also had to get the radiation valve replaced. Aftermarket stuff is not easy to come by if you're in an accident. I don't like that nothing is automatic on the vehicle like windows or locks, but I got alarm so that solved the lock issue.

Before I purchased this car, I did my research. I found out that this car, the Chevy Cavalier, was a Lemon. It was recalled, and there were numerous problems. When I asked the owner about it, he said that his car was problem free and that he special ordered it. This was 30 years ago. And I must say, I have not had any problems with this car. The car has been re-painted. The engine will need to be rebuilt, but I must say that it has been a great car to own. This has been a great car to learn from. It doesn't have all the computer diagnostics the newer cars have. In fact, this car has power steering and roll up windows. No air conditioning. It does have a heater. I have driven this car up and down the state. I have put 240,000 miles on it on top of the 30,000 it already had.
Story
I think what is memorable for me is that this car was stolen twice; and to my surprise, it was returned to me in one piece. I guess it didn't have any parts value or it was mistaken for a Honda. I don't know!
Pros
Car is American made. Parts are easy to find. Very easy to maintain. Great on gas mileage. Easy to operate.
Cons
Tires are now getting hard to find. Very little resale or trade-in value. Very unattractive car. Will need a new engine soon. Fails smog tests more often.
