The 2009 Hyundai Elantra SE was the first car I bought in the United States. My wife and I were on the market for a reliable daily driver, but we didn't want JUST a daily driver, we hoped for a bit of "sexiness" in the car, too. The Elantra hit the spot pretty well: It's as reliable and solid as they come, especially at its price point, but it also had cool lines and a very appealing look overall. Driving it never felt like a chore, and while most of the time it was used to take us to and from work, whenever we took it out on road trips or simple weekend outings, it was always a joy to drive. As silly as it may sound, it's as if the car knew what was required of it each time, and responded accordingly. The SE model we bought came equipped with about what you'd expect for a 2009 car in ... Story
We took it on an amateur "rally" (nowhere near as demanding as a real rally, just a bit of off-road driving, really). We didn't exactly distinguish ourselves, but the little car that could gave us a great time all the same!
Pros
- Wonderful handling. - Good acceleration rate for a car in its market segment. - This was my first car with XM radio, and it was a revelation. - Great to drive in any type of weather. It's very solid in winter.
Cons
- Not many frills, unless you're willing to spend a bit more. Just about the perfect daily driver otherwise.

I bought the 2017 Hyundai Elantra SE after spending four years looking at multiple cars after a car wreck left me without one. I originally rented a 2013 Hyundai Elantra after my wreck, drove it for a week and was immediately in love. It handled well, got great gas mileage, had comfortable seating, plenty of room, and it had a pretty amazing factory sound system. Once I test drove the 2017 I could not even be persuaded to reconsider my other options, because the handling has only gotten better over the years. The body design looks more like an upscale/luxury car as opposed to the previous "spaceship" look that the 2013 I test drove had.
Story
It was so much fun to go from driving this car on the flat and broken streets of New Orleans to driving it across the states, especially through West Texas with a higher speed limit, as well as along Highway 1 in California, which goes along the amazing coastline. Of course, being able to drive the car through a redwood tree was also a lot of fun, and was incredibly easy with the low profile o... (more)
Pros
I love how good the gas mileage is. I was expecting 28/37mpg, but I have consistently gotten closer to 40-42 mpg on the highway, and closer to 30-31 mpg in town. The trunk very well accommodated our family's luggage and souvenirs from a two week long road trip. After my previous car wreck I had several back injuries, which made me hesitant to even make that kind of trip driving, but between the driver's seat adjusters, the telescoping steering wheel and the seat itself, I was surprisingly incredibly comfortable - more so than I am sitting normally. The rear view camera comes in extremely ... (more)
Cons
Because of the low profile of the vehicle, the frame on the right side of the car sometimes becomes an obstruction of sight for oncoming traffic. This is easily remedied by moving my head to the left or right. Also, accessing the trunk through the 60/40 split rear bench seat is not possible as the release levers are located in the trunk. This is supposedly a safety feature, but at the same time it does make some maneuvers precarious because you have to stop in order to get out and unlatch the seat. I don't really have any other negative remarks about the car.
