When it came time for me to purchase my Jeep Patriot, I knew I wanted a smaller SUV but one that still had four-wheel drive as well. This was the perfect vehicle for me at the time because it had excellent fuel economy and plenty of space to store everything I needed to in it. Also, if I'm being honest, I also loved the prestige that comes with being a Jeep owner.
Story
I went to go visit family out in the southeastern part of Missouri. We were out driving on some rural roads in the Shawnee National Forest, and the road we were traveling on suddenly was washed out. In order to get to the other side of the road, we had to pretty much four-wheel drive it though the mud and washed out road to get to the other side. I was a little nervous, but the Jeep handled it... (more)
Pros
I would say the Jeep Patriot is one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs out there. I get about 25 mpg with it, and with a four-cylinder engine, it still has the little zip around speed of a car. The ability to store almost anything I need to is great as well. Lastly, the four-wheel drive has always served me well. I've trekked through snow and ice with it and gone off roading in national forests.
Cons
The cons started to show up after about four years of me owning it. Firstly, I had a child, and the back seat is not enough space to fit a car seat without having one of the front seats pushed up very far. Also, with a convertible car seat, you can't install it in the middle, which is the safest place for it. I've had a few problems with different sensors going out and having to replace them as well. Also, a small con but the back glass does not open. So you can't have the back gate closed and the window open if you're carrying something large. This can be a pain at times.

I initially bought this car as an SUV that was affordable with acceptable gas mileage. I also lived in a very cold climate at the time and wanted a car with four-wheel drive. I was nervous about buying a Jeep because historically they are known to be unreliable. I have been fairly good about regular maintenance and have since moved to an average climate area but with terrible roads. I am very pleased with this car as it continues to have good gas mileage compared to SUVs. I also think the model of this SUV is very unique; I always loved Jeep Cherokees but was disappointed by their changing style around 2012, with many SUVs transitioning to more of a crossover look. I thought the Patriot was where Cherokees should have evolved and remain pleased with its appearance and color.
Story
One of my favorite memories in this car is a long, 20-hour move mid-way across the country. I moved with my cat, and I have a great picture of him sitting between the driver and passenger seat on top of a box of stuff (not moving). It was a nice memory of a very big transition of my life.
Pros
I have moved several times since owning this car and am very happy about its size. I like the gas mileage, and it has remained as a reliable car with regular maintenance. I like having the four-wheel drive option for bad weather.
Cons
If I go over 75 miles per hour, the gas mileage drops significantly, but I try to stay below 75 on long car trips, which helps. The driver and passenger seats are not comfortable for long car trips, but are fine for regular commuting.
