2003 Mazda Protege5 - This is by far the best car I've ever owned.

This started as necessity purchase because my old car just needed too much work. I love Mazdas. This is the fourth Mazda I have bought, and I will be a lifelong customer. It has always performed perfectly, and has never left me on the side of the road. It's fun to drive, everything still works after all these years and the cost of ownership totally beats the fact that it's 15 years old.
Story
I was stuck in my parking garage at work. This car was narrow enough for me to drive through barriers and get out safely!
Pros
I love that it is silver, I love the roof rack. I love that it's a manual transmission, and the clutch is perfect.
Cons
Only one, and that is that the A/C would cut off when the fan was set to the 2 mark.

2003 Mazda Protege5 - Fun, agile, practical.

My family purchased our Mazda Protege5 hatchback when it was brand new and had exactly 6 miles on it. From day one the car was the closest thing to a practical Miata that Mazda had ever produced. The Protege5 has a low curb weight, which makes for very fun drives, moderate body lean, and very precise steering. The base brakes are powerful and linear, nerving jerking the car or skidding, even under hard braking. The bucket seats are comfortable, even for long drives, and the backseat is easily habitable by almost any sized person. With a combination of the backseat and hatchback trunk space, the car has great cargo capacity, making it easy to carry anything from groceries, to school bags, to guitar case and full size amplifiers. I opted to purchase the manual, five speed transmission, a... (more)
Story
Personally, I learned to drive a manual in this car, and that experience will never leave me. This is my first personal car, though I have driven quite a few others over the years.
Pros
The manual transmission shifts smoothly, even after 100,000 miles of use without a transmission swap, Low gears (1-4) have excellent pickup and speed. Sound system has good quality, with powerful bass. Good fuel economy. Precise steering. Strong brakes.
Cons
Gearing ratio makes for loud engine sounds at 70-80 mph cruising. The car runs at four thousand RPM at 80 mph while in fifth gear. Exterior styling shows signs of aging. First gear is very small-- first gear struggles to take the car past ten to fifteen miles per hour. Original paint fades quicker than other cars. Suspension doesn't take to bumps extremely well.
