2015 Mazda CX-5 - Great value for a well-made small SUV: the Mazda CX5

My Mazda CX5 performs extremely well. Even after having bought it used with 18,000 miles on it, I've had no trouble during the time that I've owned it. I drive it to and from work around 20 miles every day. The interior quality is great -- and is the main reason we went with the CX5 over the Rav4. The dash display is sleek and most everything is digital. The fabric on the seats is very nice. The exterior shape is nice and there is plenty of trunk space. Unfortunately, unlike some other brands we looked at, the CX5 doesn't come with rubber floor mats, which would have been nice. Also, the pick-up (acceleration) from a stop isn't the best.
Story
A few weekends ago, we packed up the CX5 and took our new baby on her first car trip up to the mountains in Steamboat Springs, CO. It did a great job of hauling us, her pack-n-play, a humidifier, 2 strollers, a diaper bag, a ton of baby supplies, and all of our clothes up the mountain!
Pros
My favorite features of this vehicle are mostly in the design and in how it looks. The front dash display is clean and has a video screen that has a rear-facing camera for backing up. It syncs up extremely easily to smartphones and other Bluetooth devices. It's simple to play a podcast, listen to Spotify, or answer a phone call through the car. The interior materials used for the seats don't look cheap at all, compared to other brands in the same price range. The exterior is appealing -- it's not to large or clunky. The fuel economy is great. I traded in a small car to get this SUV and the... (more)
Cons
Unfortunately, unlike some other brands, the Mazda CX5 doesn't come with rubber floor mats. You have to buy those separately. In my opinion, most people buying a small SUV would like rubber floor mats. The pick-up from a stop in my Mazda CX5 isn't great either. I find myself with the pedal to the floor a lot of times and I'm not a crazy driver, by any means.

My vehicle is grey in color and has a black interior. I love the size and the comfort level of my car. The infotainment system is not the best I have seen but it is functionally acceptable. Overall I would rate the quality of the car at an A-.
Story
Winter time in Chicago can get really bad but my Mazda has great traction and I almost never slide. So one of my fondest memories is driving on the road back to Chicago and everyone was driving slow and I was able to drive at normal speed (30 mph) with ease.
Pros
It has a great take off speed. It can go from 0 to full power in the matter of 5 seconds. It is very good on gas; I live in Chicago where the gas it typically higher and I can fill my tank up for no more than $30 and drive on it for about a week. My Mazda has a low profile but it commands the road. You can feel the difference because of the direct fuel injection. The safety features are great and it gives me amazing on-the-road miles, which is important because I am a road trip kind of person.
Cons
There are components on this car that come off. For example I have a floor board that snaps on and off and it comes off easily and often. I do not like the fact that it comes from the factory with thin rotors. This means you have to buy new rotors and pads in a relatively short amount of time. I also do not like the fact that it runs on synthetic oil. The price of my oil changes are extremely high.

It is a compact SUV. Big, but not as large as something like an Expedition. Very comfortable on road trips of 3+ hours. Very reliable. Handles well on wet roads. Seats are all very comfortable. Amazing amount of storage space for boxes and the like. I packed a good bit of my belongings into it when I moved 3 hours south earlier this year. Gas mileage is not great, but that's to be expected in an SUV of any type especially when you are coming from a sub compact and used to its gas mileage. For the audiophiles, Bose sound system is awesome. Big touch screen makes life much easier when driving. I would say on the tech side, I only wish the steering wheel stereo controls had a bit more options. I also wish the TPMS was able to tell which tire of the 4 was low in pressure rather than havi... Story
Driving a car load of belongings to my new home was an adventure. I would say there haven't been much that I would call memorable other than that.
Pros
Very comfortable. In Texas, good A/C is important and this car's A/C holds its own. Heater does just as well. Size is perfect (not too big/not too small) Plenty of storage space available especially when all back seats are folded flat. Child safety locks. Window lock controlled by driver. Rear view camera, once you get used to it, is great. I did not have one in my previous car so it took some getting used to.
Cons
No remote start. This is something I sorely miss especially in the Texas heat and cold. TPMS does not provide information on specific tire or tires with low pressure.
