The Toyota Matrix we own has a wonderful engine. It has never once broken down or given us any trouble in that regard. However, we do not like quite a few cosmetic/usage related things about it.
Story
My husband (then he was my boyfriend) and I drove it to Florida from North Carolina on our first road trip together.
Pros
Our Toyota Matrix has an excellent engine. It has never given us any trouble or broken down.
Cons
It is incredibly difficult to see behind you when backing up due to the very small windows toward the back -- it is a hatchback. Quite a few things are breaking recently -- the seatbelt adjuster, the glove compartment, and the bumper continuously falls down, and we have to kick it back in.

The Toyota Matrix has been a good vehicle purchase for me. I bought the car used (three years old) almost two years ago. I purchased the 'S' model which included all-wheel-drive and the larger 2.4L engine. Both of these features hurt the fuel economy a bit but it was weighed against the other trim options. With the S model the larger engine allows for a bit more performance and the all wheel drive is useful in case of snow or bad weather. With the S model it also includes an auxiliary audio line in, standard home power outlet, and a fold flat font seat which allows long items to be transported in the car. With the front and back seats down it is easy to transport lumber or an 8 foot ladder.
Pros
The main selling point to me is the flexible storage capacity of the car. The seats when folded down have the carrying capacity of a small Sport Utility Vehicle, with perhaps a smaller opening at the hatch-back. Combining the storage with the gas mileage of a smaller car (opposed to SUV) means this is a great car for travelling. The maintenance has been minimal (other than standard oil change, filter change, tires) and have had no major repairs needed.
Cons
Even with the larger engine option, there are still moments when I wish there was a bit more pick-up. This is a small concern and has not been a problem that would affect my purchase in the future. I do think the design of the vehicle has a slightly feminine look to it, which may affect my decision in my next vehicle. The fuel economy is good but not great. The interior is basic but functional.

This is the worst dealership EVER. The sales people are condescending, arrogant, and sexist. Their service is especially dishonest. They sell unnecessary repairs and parts. I took my car in for a recall issue and argued that I didn't need the repair. Several friends have experienced similar issues. The dealership was tolerable when Norma Cheek owned it. AVOID DOING BUSINESS HERE.

Rice Toyota is a quality car dealership. The people are professional. They are very knowledgeable about the cars they sell. Also, maintenance and repairs are done quickly and efficiently. The prices are also reasonable.
