2007 Volkswagen Jetta - Solid, reliable, fast car -- best purchase I've ever made.

This car gets excellent gas mileage, is fast, and has good pickup for entering freeways and maneuvering in traffic. The feel of the ride is European -- where you feel the road as you drive and is comfortable and easy to drive. This model has a sunroof/moon roof and front and side airbags. The trunk is really large for the size of the car and holds tons of groceries. The back seat is quite spacious for such a small car and holds four adults easily. The air conditioning works well and lasted for nine years on its first charge. The sound system is great, with three sets of radio pre-sets and a CD player. This model doesn't have Bluetooth, but it does have an audio jack in the glove compartment to connect a phone or device. It has a space in the backseat that opens up into the trunk, so yo... (more)
Story
Right after I adopted my dog, he was in the back seat. I didn't know the windows had child locks and that they were off, so he figured out how to open the window. Then he jumped out!
Pros
This car is compact on the outside but spacious on the inside. It's easy to parallel park. The gas mileage is excellent. The seating is comfortable, and the faux leather seats are easy to clean.
Cons
The trunk doesn't have enough room for all the things you need for a long trip. The rear brakes wear out relatively quickly. It takes synthetic motor oil which is the more expensive kind.

2005 Volkswagen Jetta - Solid Car with a Depreciating Value

The 2005 Volkswagen Jetta is a good car for a high school or college student--a solid starter with few mechanical or electrical problems. With so many Volkswagens on the road, maintenance is also relatively cheap with many mom and pop mechanics offering services. The interior is simple enough, and the both it and the exterior are relatively easy to maintain. The car is fun to drive (I can speak for the manual transmission option) and good on gas.
Story
My partner and I once strapped a newly purchased mattress to the roof using nothing but the twine provided at the store. Needless to say we caused quite the spectacle driving down the 5 freeway in San Diego.
Pros
The Jetta is a fairly economical vehicle averaging about 26 mpg with about fifty fifty highway and city driving. The interior is adjustable--the back seats fold down allowing for increased carrying capacity in the trunk. The Jetta also has had few mechanical and electrical issues which saves on maintenance--ideal for students on a budget.
Cons
The major downside to this car is its depreciation. Purchased for about $8,000 from a dealer four years ago, the car is now worth about $3,000 in decent condition with less than average mileage. I also imagine that with Volkswagen's recent hiccup with emissions, the value has only decreased further.
