2000 Lexus GS 300 - Reliable vehicle at 170,000 miles
It's a reliable car, assuming you are a responsible car owner and have maintenance performed when needed and consistently. The car, though 17 years old, still drives like a luxury auto. The air conditioning unit has finally failed, where the internal switch has collapsed, and though the A/C turns on, the air is no longer properly directed to flow through the vents. The estimates have this A/C job costing approximately $1,800.00. The door's auto lock feature has started to fail, and now does not lock/unlock two of the four doors. Again, the switch in the passenger side door needs to be replaced, and the cost of the job is steep (@$1,000). Living in Southern CA in Los Angeles county, the car's paint has started to oxidize with the faded white grey appearance. Also, the trim along the to... (more)
Story
We caught and transported a couple of mating ducks from our backyard pool to the local city park's lake. The back seat actually fit the contraption that we used to transport the mom and pop ducks.
Pros
Favorite features include the sunroof that fully opens, the seat warmers, the automatic seat adjuster, and the ability to fold down both rear seat to accommodate any longer larger cargo.
Cons
The leather has started to crack on the seats and on the armrest center console. The center console has now disintegrated into a flapping piece of leather that catches on everything. The cost of the A/C job and the door auto-lock job is extremely steep and for a 17-year-old car. I am debating on selling the car and using the $3,000 that I would otherwise use on fixing these two items on a newer car.
2000 Lexus GS 300 - Long live the Lexus
For a pretty old car (almost 20 years old!), this car still runs well and feels like a luxury model. The interior is sleek and comfortable and because it was a high-end car, when it came out, its functions are not very outdated (e.g. heat warmers, ability to set a preferred seat set-up). The car runs very smooth and has nice pick-up. It also has some good anti-slip technology for when it rains or snows. The sounds system is good although not exceptional, and since it's old, it doesn't have some perks such as iPhone hook-ups.
Story
We take the car all the time in to NYC, and it does very well driving in the busy Manhattan streets.
Pros
Long lasting. Comfortable. Sleek and elegant. Nice seat technology. Nice driving.
Cons
Old. No iPhone hook-up. Outdated sound system.
