The 2005 Scion xB is a front-wheel drive "thing" alternatively classified as a hatchback, subcompact, or station wagon - it is not quite any of these things (though it does qualify as subcompact, the amount of interior room is much greater than any other subcompact). It features a very distinctive, boxy appearance.
Story
After buying it, my father and I arrived back at his house. My 14 year old sister didn't recognize the vehicle and came outside to see who it was, and upon seeing us exit the vehicle, thought I'd bought it brand new, as it looked so good.
Pros
High mileage - 32-32.5 Mpg combined Rear Wiper Very practical - rear seats fold down to provide a lot of cargo space Decent sound system (even better if you replace the stock head unit) Many standard safety features - antilock brakes, vehicle stability control, traction control. It's got so much interior room it's practically a Tardis (bigger on the inside) The engine is tuned perfectly - it will accelerate faster if you need it to, and it doesn't feel as small as 1.5 Liters (but that's all it is) Appears on Consumer Reports' list of most reliable used vehicles
Cons
Dashboard instrument panel in stupid location Dashboard instrument panel only shows speed, rpm, fuel. Only 1 intermittent wiper speed Dashboard / cabin has lots of useless little shelves that could have been storage compartments Gearshift is not correctly aligned (3rd and 4th should be up and down / forward and rear, respectively, but are at an angle. I suspect the clutch and shifter were replaced at some point and the original may not have had this problem). Clutch is touchy and requires a lot of force to push in. No cruise control There's a fog lights switch but no fog lights (nor anyth... (more)

Scion XB is made by its parent company, Toyota. It is a Toyota engine. One thing I have noticed about Toyota engines is that as long as you stick to the maintenance schedules, your car will run forever. I have owned the car for 11 years now and not had a single problem. The mileage is great. On average, I'm getting 38 mpg in city and around 40 mpg on the highway. It is a 4 cylinder, so it isn't going to win any speed competitions but it has enough get up and go to navigate steep roads in the mountains with no problem. The Scion XB doesn't look like every other car out there. So on top of having a reliable vehicle, you have a vehicle that you can spot within seconds in any parking lot. I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten where I parked and just looked for the box on wheels. ... (more)
Story
My mother used to say that it looked like a bus that backed into a brick wall. Until she saw how much I could fit inside, then she just stayed quiet.
Pros
* Great gas mileage *roomy * unique * reliable
Cons
*Targeted for theft *no 4 wheel drive *low clearance, gets stuck in snow

I have owned my 2005 Scion XB for over 10 years and it has been extremely reliable and trouble-free! The reputation of Toyota brought the car to my attention and the price and versatility sold me on it. The purchase price (purchased new from a dealer) was very reasonable at under $15,000. And it continues to be cost efficient in both the gas consumption, gets approximately 30 MPG highway/city, and with its low repair rate. I have had to do no repairs and only the bare minimum of preventative maintenance (I'm doing good if I manage an oil change once a year and tune-up every two years!) It is a very versatile vehicle in that it seats a minimum of 4 people comfortably as well as can be transformed into a work vehicle with its hatchback and lowering of the back seats. I have used this car... (more)
Story
Transporting a studio size refrigerator; the Lowe's home repair person assisting me loading could not believe that we got the refrigerator into that little car!
Pros
The most positive things about this car is its affordability, versatility and reliability. My favorite feature is the spaciousness of the interior while still being a compact car and maneuvers easily into the tightest parking space!
Cons
The only complaint I have is that the cigarette lighter stopped working within a couple of months of purchase. It was still under warranty so the dealer replaced it but unfortunately stopped working again soon after. I had it replaced yet again with the same result. At that point I decided I could do without that feature.
