The 2005 Scion xB is a front-wheel drive "thing" alternatively classified as a hatchback, subcompact, or station wagon - it is not quite any of these things (though it does qualify as subcompact, the amount of interior room is much greater than any other subcompact). It features a very distinctive, boxy appearance.
Story
After buying it, my father and I arrived back at his house. My 14 year old sister didn't recognize the vehicle and came outside to see who it was, and upon seeing us exit the vehicle, thought I'd bought it brand new, as it looked so good.
Pros
High mileage - 32-32.5 Mpg combined Rear Wiper Very practical - rear seats fold down to provide a lot of cargo space Decent sound system (even better if you replace the stock head unit) Many standard safety features - antilock brakes, vehicle stability control, traction control. It's got so much interior room it's practically a Tardis (bigger on the inside) The engine is tuned perfectly - it will accelerate faster if you need it to, and it doesn't feel as small as 1.5 Liters (but that's all it is) Appears on Consumer Reports' list of most reliable used vehicles
Cons
Dashboard instrument panel in stupid location Dashboard instrument panel only shows speed, rpm, fuel. Only 1 intermittent wiper speed Dashboard / cabin has lots of useless little shelves that could have been storage compartments Gearshift is not correctly aligned (3rd and 4th should be up and down / forward and rear, respectively, but are at an angle. I suspect the clutch and shifter were replaced at some point and the original may not have had this problem). Clutch is touchy and requires a lot of force to push in. No cruise control There's a fog lights switch but no fog lights (nor anyth... (more)

Scion XB is made by its parent company, Toyota. It is a Toyota engine. One thing I have noticed about Toyota engines is that as long as you stick to the maintenance schedules, your car will run forever. I have owned the car for 11 years now and not had a single problem. The mileage is great. On average, I'm getting 38 mpg in city and around 40 mpg on the highway. It is a 4 cylinder, so it isn't going to win any speed competitions but it has enough get up and go to navigate steep roads in the mountains with no problem. The Scion XB doesn't look like every other car out there. So on top of having a reliable vehicle, you have a vehicle that you can spot within seconds in any parking lot. I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten where I parked and just looked for the box on wheels. ... (more)
Story
My mother used to say that it looked like a bus that backed into a brick wall. Until she saw how much I could fit inside, then she just stayed quiet.
Pros
* Great gas mileage *roomy * unique * reliable
Cons
*Targeted for theft *no 4 wheel drive *low clearance, gets stuck in snow

This is a really nice car. Some people don't like the look of it, but I think it's really cute. I've used this car for a lot of different things: daily commute, roads trips, hauling heavy product 8+ hours for work, pulling a trailer with heavy work equipment on it, driving in snow/very bad weather. It's held up very well over the years even with daily use and some bigger jobs like hauling the trailer. One of the things I really like is how much room there is in the back if you put the back seats down. That was a really nice feature when I needed to transport a lot of equipment/supplies for work to the next state over. There's so much room in the back, I was able to fit a 32" floor buffer in the back as well as the 4' ramps I used to get it in. The car feels really nice to drive. The in... (more)
Story
I learned to drive stick in this car. I went to the Walmart parking lot to practice.
Pros
It gets good gas mileage even after 200,000+ miles on it. Very comfortable in the front and back seats. Very compact so it's easy to park. I like the look of the car. High visibility. Lots of room in the back if the seats are put down.
Cons
It's very flat on the sides so it can be kind of hard to drive in windy weather. The back doors are extremely light so people often slam the doors on accident.
