2008 Subaru Impreza - Great car
I love this car! It has decent gas mileage and I feel like my family is safe inside. I like the all wheel drive and its a great car to take camping. We love the hatchback and the space it provides.

We bought this car to drive to California and it was a great trip. In the first couple months of owning it we put 2500 miles on it.

2008 Subaru Impreza - Best reliable AWD sedan
The Subaru Impreza in my personal opinion is the best AWD sedan out there at its time. Living in the Northeast of America, I've experienced very brutal winters, and the Impreza had no trouble in navigating in snow covered terrain, even with only all season tires. The power-to-weight ratio is just right; in other words, it's tamed during city commute, but semi-aggressive when overtaking. Also, I'm speechless with its reliability. It currently has about 140K on the odometer, and I haven't had a single issue. I haven't experienced a major accident with my vehicle, but reading about the IIHS ratings as well as testimonials, I'm confident that my Impreza will save me from virtually any crash. Gas mileage is great with the Subaru Impreza, to which I was able to achieve approximately 300 miles of pure highway miles (without A/C and only 1 passenger). Furthermore, when it comes to the engine bay, maintenance is easy and straightforward. Everything that is crucial for the health of the car is labeled in bright yellow paint, is easy to reach, and enough space to work around with. Unfortunately, the Impreza lacks in sound quality when it comes to the speakers. It isn't anything fancy, but it gets the job done. Finally, as a car enthusiast, I've essentially built a track-ready Impreza. Some parts are coil over suspension, anti-roll bars, wider tires, bigger brakes, custom tuned, larger radiator, and much more. The Subaru Impreza platform is very aftermarket friendly.
The most memorable story is the 950-mile round trip from New York to Virginia with three friends. I had just purchased my Impreza with 130K miles and decided to celebrate and test its limit with a road trip. The only prior maintenance I did was an engine oil change and an engine air filter. Throughout the entire trip, my car ran like a champ. We did a total of six pit stops for gas and restroom, but no breaks. Once we got back to New York, my car didn't show any signs of fatigue or breaking down. I was genuinely surprised, and it made me fall in love with car even more.
The very top positive aspect of my Impreza is the safety rating, which surpassed all IIHS testing and received a 'Good' for all tests. Safety is always my number one priority. The second positive aspect is its reliability. I've taken my Impreza to many road trips, including a 950-mile round trip without any sleep, and not once it showed any signs of fatigue or issues. The third positive aspect is the power-to-weight. Even though the engine only puts out 170 HP at the engine, it weighs pretty light for an AWD setup, which weighs approximately 3000 pounds. I'm able to keep up with newer model cars that are faster as well as overtake trucks with ease. My most favorite feature of the Subaru Impreza is the symmetrical all wheel drive that all Subaru vehicles has (except for the BRZ). In a nutshell, both the front and rear wheels receive equal amount of power during regular driving. However, once the driver comes across a slippery or rough terrain, power is sent to the wheels that have the greatest amount of traction. I have witnessed this numerous times during the winter season, and it has saved me from getting stuck. Also, due to the symmetrical design of the drivetrain, the vehicle is well balanced and I feel that I have full control of the car.
There are a few things that I wish Subaru improved on. Firstly, the sound system. The quality isn't the greatest as it sounds pretty generic and outdated. It doesn't cost much to upgrade to subpar speakers and head unit. Secondly, my climate controls are analog instead of digital. There are 2001-year cars that have digital climate controls, so I'm not sure why Subaru chose to go analog. Third, the paint thickness is unacceptable. It's prone to a lot of rock chips and rock chips. This will then lead to panels rusting fairly quickly. This can easily be seen on the hood and wheel arches. Anot... (more)

Another con about the Impreza is the lack of sound deadening material. Road noise drone can easily fill the cabin above speeds of 50mph, and it gets worse as speed increases and/or when it rains. And finally, probably the worst con for the Impreza is that it has a timing belt rather than a timing chain. Subaru engines are interference engines, which means if the belt snaps, there's a high possibility that the engine is destroyed. The only reason that Subaru chose belts is to reduce cost. The did went back to chain-driven belts for the newer vehicles, but I wish they never switched to belts in the first place.
