The VW Jetta has always been a quality vehicle and I have 15 years of experience to prove it. I have had very little mechanical issues with the engine, which is built alongside BMW and Audi engines. The 2002 GLS Jetta models are built very well, especially when compared to the Jetta models built between 2008-2015. It's a 4-cylinder car that drives extremely well, very good gas mileage, extremely good turn radius; and very few problems with the engine over the years. There have been, however, some minor issues such as the brake light switch, window issues, and some internal components that are a little flimsy.
Story
I used to take my Jetta to a local oil change shop. A lady who works there told me that she always loved getting into my car to check the gauges because it always smells like the pink (or maybe it was the orange) Crayola crayon. I had never heard that, but she mentioned that most of the VWs (especially Jettas) she has been in over the years have the same smell.
Pros
The 2002 VW Jetta gets very good gas mileage- Very reliable car with a good engine/transmission with very few problems in 15 years. The trunk is spacious and with the let-down rear seats, can accommodate large/long objects.
Cons
There was a recall on a malfunctioning brake-light switch. I experienced this issue and it prevents the driver from moving the shift lock into the "Drive-D" position. The sunroof (moonroof) leaked on some vehicles. Mine didn't, but I allowed the dealer to replace it during the recall period. Some plastic components inside the vehicle break easily. For example, the cup holders and the center console cover. With a 4-cyclinder, the horsepower is not so great.

I purchased a 1999 Jetta GLS stick shift a couple of years ago. I now have over 200K miles on it with no problems. The car feels like it is not even broken in. I highly recommend a Jetta to anyone interested in a solid car.
Story
I used to take my car on the race track. The car is a sedan but can keep up with most coupes. My favorite memorable story is when my car beat a friend of mine's car at the track. Everyone was surprised.
Pros
Solid car. Drives nice even with 200k on it. Still gets looks from everyone that sees it. Shift smoothly.
Cons
The interior finish. The finishes on the interior is not the best and shows it's age quickly. The car can be a little more expensive to work on.
