Considering its size and weight, and automatic gearbox, this car performs impressively with it's 204 HP. It accelerates to highway speed in no time, and does the acceleration smoothly and swiftly. This has no negative consequences to the luxurious feel the car was meant to give, as it is an all-out luxury sedan.
Pros
We purchased our 960 wagon because my uncle got 375k miles out of his '93 960 wagon, so I figured there must be something to be said about the build quality and the reputation of Volvo. This car is a comfort on long drives and handles surprisingly well for a wagon. The big soft leather heated seats are wonderful and welcoming on cold days. This car is very classy and understated. We have not had any serious repairs other than routine service.
Cons
Bought the 960 in 1992 - new - 3.6 miles on it. Changed the timing belt every 30K miles as directed. Performed all maintenance required in accordance with the owner's manual. At 98K miles (1999 A.D.), the timing belt snapped while driving - valves into the pistons, ruined the (aluminum $1,700) head.

1996 Volvo 960 - This old Volvo keeps on going.

I have a 1996 Volvo 960 Sedan. This is not an exciting car by any means. It is not for everyone. But for myself it is the best made car I have ever had. For me what is important in a car are three things: Dependability, safety and price.
Story
I parked next to someone with the exact same model once. It was funny.
Pros
Let's start off with the price. I paid $800 for it two years ago. Yes, I said $800. Everything works on it. It could use a new paint job but that is about it. My Volvo starts every time. And it gets pretty good gas mileage too. How about safety? Volvo's have a reputation for holding up very well in crashes. I feel good about my family and myself riding in this old Swedish brick. As far as durability goes. Volvo's have been know to last over one million miles. My Volvo has over 200,000 miles and seems to have a long way to go. I keep the maintenance up to date and check all the fluids regul... (more)
Cons
My car is no head turner. It is basic solid transportation.

I own a 1994 Volvo 960. I truly can not say enough about how much I like this vehicle. It may not be the most attractive vehicle on the road but it more than does what it needs to do. It gets amazing gas mileage over 30 miles per gallon in the city and over 35 on the highway. It is reliable and very inexpensive to work on. The air conditioning works great, I often get asked to turn it down because of how cold it gets. The steering and handling is every bit as good as cars much more expensive like Mercedes or BMW's. It is not incredibly quite but it is not loud at all either. The stereo likely needs to be upgraded as it is not as good as other cars but it is more than adequate for the normal user. One big negative is that it is quite slow off the line, it would definitely be better if i... (more)
