I own a silver 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser. I knew the moment I saw it that it was going to be mine and I couldn't have made a better choice. Especially for the price. I bought it used four years ago with 140,000 miles. The dealer had just purchased the car from auction and was not aware if the car was in need of maintenance, but I purchased it anyway. Best decision EVER. The five speed standard transmission shifted perfectly. The interior is leather and easily cleans up. The back seats are fold-able and/or removable to allow for more space. Although the back is really spacious for a compact car to begin with. I did not like having to take my rear-seat head rest off in order to see out of my rear view mirror, but it was a minute inconvenience and easily resolved.
Story
Driving along the coast is so much fun in this car and one of the things I like to do most in it. With the sun roof back and the windows down in the summer time; it just feels like it was made for scenic routes.
Pros
My favorite features of the vehicle are many. I like the sunroof and the option of the seats being completely removable. The car came stock with 16" chrome rims; not hubcaps. Automatic windows and locks are nice and I like being able to lock my children's windows in the back. The ride is spacious with two captain's seats and room for three passengers in the back, making it a nice long-distance ride car. It has excellent gas mileage at around 34-37 mpg. Standard 5-speed transmission is likely a factor in the excellent gas mileage.
Cons
As much as I dislike speaking any ill of my car, there are some cons. The car is hard to work on from under the hood as everything is packed in very tightly. The car tends to run hot in summer even after changing the fan and thermostat. Maintenance is expensive due to how hard the car is to work on as well. There is a sensor that controls the air and fuel intake that goes bad and needs to be replaced quite often in my opinion, which at around $100 a pop is certainly a con.

The 2001 PT Cruiser is a sturdy car and a great first-timers car. With over 20,000 miles on it and climbing, I haven't had to do much engine maintenance. Yet the entire has started to show wear and tear. The dash has started to crack with the right side window covering falling off, and the seats have started to crack as well. The horn has failed on me, and the battery now only seems to last me about a year and a half before I have to replace it. I have had no issues though with any engine functions and make long drives every month knowing it will get me to where I need to go. I would watch out with the tires, due to them being chrome rims, when they begin to rust. It does causes major tire issues, but it is a simple fix. I travel a lot with my husband and dog, and although this car may... (more)
Story
I had just had my horn replaced and was driving back to Charlotte. My horn shouldn't have been working if I mashed my steering wheel, so usually, I rest my head down on it when I stop at a light. I pulled up at a light by my house and did as usual and the horn suddenly went off without warning. I jumped and started screaming, and the car next to me just stared and laughed.
Pros
I love that the vehicle is small and compact. I also love the arm rest.
Cons
I hate the shape of the vehicle, the leather seats and the low-profile tires.
