I purchased a 2002 PT Cruiser from a private seller when it had only 92,000 miles. When I first bought my car it ran really well, even being close to 100k miles. The gas mileage was great, close to 30mpg, which was amazing when gas prices were close to $4.00 per gallon. The only problems I ran into initially were with the electrical system. The dash cluster seemed to flash on and off for no reason. I never did get the chance to figure out why, but I later found out there was a recall that I had never known about before. I was highly satisfied with the way the car handled, however that satisfaction was diminished when I recently suffered an auto accident and the safety features failed me.
Story
I love the hatchback! I really enjoy going to the beach, and there was plenty of room in the back to hold a full sized cooler and all the gear we needed. There was even a flip up plastic table in the back that you could use, which I had never seen in a vehicle before.
Pros
The top favorite things about my cruiser were the gas mileage and the spaciousness inside the car. The gas mileage was close to 30 mpg when I first got it. After some time, I did have a few issues with the fuel delivery system that I could not afford to repair, so it went down to about 22-25 mpg, but a tank full could last me a whole week. The inside space was astonishing. There were so many times that I would give people a ride somewhere, and they could not believe how much personal space there was inside the car. I could comfortably fit five people, with enough space in the back hatch to... (more)
Cons
The worst thing about the PT Cruiser is the almost guaranteed repairs that will need to be done at certain mileages. I was warned by a mechanic that at around 100k miles the water pump goes out on almost 90% of them, and that I should replace it before it were to happen. I didn't believe that it would be a guarantee, but sure enough at 102k miles my water pump blew. Luckily I was only two blocks from home, otherwise I would have been stranded. I am also disappointed in the safety features of the vehicle. I was in a rollover accident in which my airbags never deployed, my seat belt came und... (more)

My PT Cruiser served me well for several years. I bought the car for cash, paying 2,400 dollars. It had 123k miles when purchased on the engine. During the time I owned it, I had to replace the head gasket, which was expensive, but that was the only major repair required for the vehicle. I performed standard maintenance, and the car ran well. I used the car primarily for delivering pizzas, so it got a lot of mileage in the 3+ years I owned it. I also moved to another state while I owned it and moved back so it had a few long-distance trips under the hood during my ownership. I did have to have some minor exhaust work done as the pipe rusted out a little with a minor hole forming while I was living in Alabama. I was also in a minor accident due to someone hitting my car in a parking lot... (more)
Story
Delivering pizzas was great in this vehicle because the seats folded down in the back, and I had lots of storage space for a small car. I even hauled some cargo for friends who would offer me some money.
Pros
The car was excellent on gas mileage, getting an average of 23 mpg in the city when I was delivering pizzas and around 28 mpg on highways when I took long trips. It had a good acceleration for a four-cylinder engine, and it was comfortable to drive as I'm a larger-than-average person.
Cons
The car had a tendency to fog up on the inside windshield, even on clear days if I ran the AC when it was hot or the heater when it was cold. I found this annoying. It also sat very low to the ground, and I had to be careful not to run over anything or it would scrape the oil pan or under carriage.
