1987 Subaru DL - Reliable & saves gas
This car is an old warhorse. Subarus last for a very long time and remain reliable right up until they finally die, unlike most American-made vehicles which limp along until you replace them. It doesn't look like the best of vehicles and lacks a lot of the fancy trips, wheels, and audio equipment that the newest cars have. But you can put in very good audio, and it has numerous other features which make it a great long-distance driving car for major trips or rural living. Mine is a stick-shift and it performed extremely well in quick shift changes, as when coming off ramp from a freeway to sharp right turns onto a major city street. It is easy to parallel park. It doesn't have an extremely fast acceleration but there are truly rare places you need that, anyway.

This car served me well on field trips when I would have to go onto unpaved roads, some with very deep ruts, because it has a fairly high carriage (not as high as the Ford Explorer or some vans/trucks). I knew I would not need to worry about my transmission scraping the road. I used it to go into fairly wild territory where I live-trapped rodents and kept them cool enough in the back during the summer. I hung a white canvas from the back hatch door, opened it wide, forming a white "tent", and kept me and my rodents in cool shade during the day while I slept in the desert. Most of the mileage I put onto it was in traveling the back roads of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, and Colorado where I got to see a lot country that most Americans never get to see.
This car is very reliable. As a friend said, "you can drive a Subaru until it dies". Hers lasted 11 years, mine has lasted 27 years. It is a station wagon, so it is a very much cheaper family model because it can carry so much, and keep it covered, unlike in a truck. Even with a canopy added to a truck bed, this station wagon is far better because you do not have to lose contact with whoever or whatever you keep in back, so you can put kids/dog there. Best of all it is not a gas guzzler and still gets 32 miles per gallon, which is still far better than most new cars today.

You have to keep it up with close attention to oil change and tune-ups, just like all cars. There are some pricey stages, as when you have to replace a transmission or other major care after about 10 years or more (mine still has the original transmission and engine). But you have to do that with all cars and the Subaru lasts much longer until you do have to replace expensive parts. Best, if you have to pull over for a nap or an overnight stop at a rest stop, the back seat folds down to a very long 8 ft bed (you supply the mattress). Better, it has 4-wheel drive, but not All-wheel drive. The former is better than the latter because you get to choose to go into it, but you have to be in AWD all the time no matter. This means I could get better gas mileage than the Forester but still benefit from better gripping on an icy road.
It doesn't even look like something from this century, when there are only a few station wagons still out there on the road (mostly Toyotas). So if you are looking for something that looks really new, you are going to have to pay for it. It did not have motorized windows or power steering, and air conditioning was not an option in the used DL I bought. Subaru up until about 5 years ago had truly awful colors. I did not like the steel gray color of this car which only made it get hotter inside in the summer, and you have to be driving at least 55 mph before you get enough air flow to start ... (more)

I did not like the steel gray color of this car which only made it get hotter inside in the summer, and you have to be driving at least 55 mph before you get enough air flow to start to cool down the interior, so this is not good for summer city driving. My model is old enough that it is hard to find tires to fit it so you have to buy good quality tires and travel far to find them. You also have to ready to accept non-standard parts, but which still fit. This means finding a good mechanic who loves Subarus. I have been very lucky in this aspect.
2010 Subaru RX -
This vehicle is great on gas mileage as well as so many other perks to this vehicle. It's driven over 15,000 miles, yet stands well with no rattling in any part of the vehicle.
The visual of the meters like for gas and such light up so well making it easy to read. The vehicle is sleek and suitable for any person and even great for a family vehicle. The seating is great for plus size people to fit behind the wheel and drive as well as be comfortable while sitting for long hours. This vehicle is very reliable no matter what the weather is outside; it takes me everywhere I need to be with no fuss. With its great mileage I can go farther than I have with most vehicles.

This vehicle has a big trunk area space making it the best to go down to the beach or fishing to take your poles and bate with you. I can fit up to $400 worth of food in the trunk area space and still have some room left. Great for lugging children around from soccer games or after school things they do.
piling up in the vehicle and shoving fishing supplies in the trunk area and driving down for a spontaneous day at the beach without having to spend one dime cause we had everything packed int his vehicle.

Great gas mileage, sleek style, has a lot of room for kids or items for trips, comfortable seats, great for plus size people.

Can feel cramped with too many passengers sometimes.

2006 Subaru Standard - Great Car
Awe inspiring acceleration and incredible braking are the first thing that come to mind. Coupled with aggressive styling and a roomy interior for a rally inspired car set it above the rest. You can't ever argue with having room for three adults and a dog, while still being able to fill the trunk with two weeks of groceries. This car can do it all from blasting up a mountain road to driving in the dead of winter in six inches of snow. The leather seating looks great and shows no signs of age while still being very comfortable. All accessories still work as perfect as the day it was new.

This car was a blast to drive late night to the beach. Just put on cruise control at your preference of speeds and let it handle the rest.

Has needed no maintenance in 40,000 miles besides a few $20 oil changes every few thousand miles. Very fast and handles very well. A real head turner. The black leather interior looks great.

The turbo lag can be hard to get used to. Also, when parts are needed (for example brakes, bulbs) they tend to be on the expensive side. There's not much room to work with if you are a backyard mechanic.
