The Volvo XC90 is the first Volvo I have driven, although it is my husband's second Volvo. He was sold on Volvo's because of their dependability and safety, two things that are very important to us for transporting our children. The XC90 is a sporty-designed SUV, not boxy (like I remember the older Volvos). It is roomy, well appointed with dual airbags, temperature control for the front drivers and passengers seats, and a TV for watching movies on the back of the front headrests. It seats 7, although the back 2 seats (back row) are not comfortable if you are an adult, or even an older kid...but they are perfect for younger kids. The middle seat (in the middle row) also has a built-in booster seat, which is handy; it also converts to a traditional seat quite easily. The outside seat on ... (more)
Story
We drove from our home in the Midwest to California in the XC90. It handled great. It was a little crowded, so we actually ended up purchasing a rooftop carrier after we arrived in California...and the drive back was much more comfortable!
Pros
The XC90 seats 7. It is an extremely safe car. It also rides smoothly and handles all terrains well. My favorite part about it (besides that it is such a safe car!) is the way it looks. I am proud when I get into the XC90 because it just looks luxurious.
Cons
The third row (and middle row, for that matter) could be roomier. To be honest, that is the only thing we have had a problem with on the Volvo.

There are so many things I love about the Volvo XC90. There is plenty of room for 7 passengers and with a young child who likes to have play dates, extra seats are always a bonus. There is plenty of cargo space when the 3rd row seating is not in use. I can fit a large dog crate plus two dogs and the human's luggage in the rear. The most amazing feature to me though is the AWD. I grew up in a warm climate but now live in an area that regularly receives snow in the winter. I am naturally a bit nervous driving in those conditions but the Volvo doesn't miss a beat. The AWD is automatic and there is a winter weather mode that lowers the torque and makes for a steady ride in less than ideal conditions. I now have over 100,000 miles on the vehicle and have never had any major maintenance issu... (more)
Story
We like using the Volvo to tailgate before concerts. The hatch door opens and gives you cover from the elements and the bottom door folds down to give you a seat.
Pros
The Volvo XC90 has excellent traction in winter and wet weather thanks to the AWD. You can add an option for a built in booster seat in the rear, center seat for those unexpected smaller guests and put it away when not in use. The cargo area is large and has a flip up panel with hooks to prevent grocery sacks from spilling. I'm also comforted knowing Volvo takes safety very seriously and is often the leader in new technological advances in the automotive industry. I've seen, through the eyes of a good friend, exactly how the Volvo protects you in a roll over accident and I couldn't be more... (more)
Cons
I have owned the car for approximately five years and I've yet to come up with something that I don't like about it… and I tell anyone who asks.
