Low cost. Good mileage.
I bought my Echo with 172,000 miles on it. Shortly after purchase, the shift cables froze. Not Toyota's issue. It was pinched in an exhaust connection by a dumb mechanic. Replaced leaky water pump and a weak alternator. Other than that, it's been oil and filter changes, air filter, and spark plug. All brake pads and shoes replaced along with tires.

2001 Toyota Echo: Not so bad!
I received this vehicle under circumstances that are a bit different than most people obtain a car. My little sister passed away, and this car sat in my brother's yard for several years. It only had about 20,000 miles on the odometer but had suffered from a general lack of maintenance. The tires were shot, and the fluids and brakes were in desperate need of replacing. After the brakes were replaced, the fluids drained and refilled, we replaced the tires. The interior was in a bit of disarray due to the way my sister lived her life, but this was easily remedied. It should be noted that the car was located in Virginia, and I live in Arkansas. I rented a car and drove out to Virginia to retrieve the Echo. After the maintenance was completed, it drove well - if not excellently. It is a small car - my girlfriend at the time called it a "skateboard" since it was so small, but that is fine with me. The gas mileage is great - thirty miles to the gallon or so is to be expected. It has a surprising "zip" to it when you put the pedal to the metal, so it is fun to drive on the highway.
