2006 Toyota Matrix - Toyota Matrix--Overall, a Great Car
I really like the sturdiness of my 2006 Toyota Matrix. The car is well built. When I drive it, the ride is smooth and the outside noises stay outside. All the major parts on the car seem to be in good working order. Since, buying the car, even though it has 123,000 miles, there have been few problems due to poor manufacturing. Any problems the car has had have largely been as a result of my own fault.

I enjoy putting the dogs in the back and driving to the beach.
A Favor
There are a lot of pros to this car. First, the car gets excellent gas mileage. My gas bill has dropped by about $20 dollars per week from my older car. Second, I also enjoy that the car has a good engine. The car has no problems picking up speed to go over hills and bridges. Third, the car is very roomy. There is plenty of leg room in all sitting positions: I have never had to ask a passenger if they have enough room--I know they do! In additional to that, the hatchback piece of the car is also very spacious. I can put a lot in the back end of the car. It can hold several bags, my work ma... (more)
En Contra
There are not many down sides to this car. My biggest issue so far has been hitting my head on the hatch on the back because it does not raise very high, being that the car is fairly low to the ground. But this is an easy workaround. Oh yes, and every few gas fill ups, the gas pump handle seems to get logged into the gas tank, which requires a little muscle to pull the handle out. The hole on the tank does seem a little smaller than other cars I have had previously. Finally, the seats in this car are AMAZING. After a long day of work, I love sitting back in them.
2006 Toyota Matrix - Comfortable to drive, great storage
I love this car. I regularly transport 2-4 medium/large sized dogs in it. Even with dogs and crates, I can still pack a full set of camping gear and dog training supplies. I've never gone on a trip and not had enough room to pack everything I wanted. In a pinch I can even sleep in the back, and I'm six feet tall.
Mechanically, it's a great car. It gets about 33 mi/gallon on the highway and about 27-30 city driving. I've put 40k miles on it in three years. Other than a new battery and a new set of tires, it hasn't needed anything else than routine maintenance. I'm a very tall person, and it is extremely comfortable to drive. I love where the gear shift is located.

Within weeks of getting this car, a friend and I drove 500 miles to Ohio for a camping trip. We had 80 pounds of dog, 3 crates, two full sets of camping gear, food and snacks, and two human adult women riding comfortably the whole way. My friend's mom actually has the same car, so she knew my new car better than I did and pointed out many handy features.
A Favor
My favorite features are storage space, driver space design, fold down backseats, and gas mileage.
En Contra
Occasionally the steering wheel can lock if you turn it too much when the car is off. Some of the plastic trim on the bottom of the vehicle is not the most durable. A few pieces have become detached. It doesn't affect the drive ability of the car, it's just ugly. Don't pull too far forward over curbs, because backing up over them can rip of pieces.
The Matrix does an admirable job of driving off road, but it's not really it's forte.
2004 Toyota Matrix -
The Toyota Matrix has a few quirks. That's a fact, but for overall performance as a 15-year-old vehicle, it runs better, looks better and maintains better than any other used care I've ever owned. I did have to replace the brakes last year, and they were 12 years old. That is not an exaggeration. The engine makes no noise, the mileage based on gas use is over 32 mpg. It heats up fast in the winter, and the A/C has only required basic maintenance twice in the life of the car. I've had many used cars as a single mom over the last 35 years: Honda, Subaru, Ford, Saturn, Toyota, Cadillac. Not one of those could even come close to the performance and reliability of this vehicle. Yes, there are some problems with the airbags, but those are being replaced. Yes, some of the lettering has worn o... (more)

I used to have an orange male tabby who loved to ride with me in my car. The back has a suspension net you can set up, and I would put his blanket in there and then let him drive around with me to my children's when they needed house sitting.
A Favor
Maintenance - keep the oil changed, the tires rotated, check it for the regular maintenance routine in the manual and this car will run forever. Look - You never feel like you're driving anything less than the pretty little sister of an SUV. Reliable - 13 years old and driven across the USA without a second's worry, and amazing gas mileage of 32 mpg for me as well. This car is 15 years old and has over 133 k miles on it and drives like it's just off the lot.
En Contra
The only one I can think of is the lettering worn off the CD player, but maybe, I just use my CD player more than other people!
