2000 Mercury Grand Marquis - Solid comfy ride but a real pig on gas

Inherited vehicle from my Dad. It is a perfect vehicle for a senior citizen. Very safe, solid and comfy ride. Comes with all the bells and whistles- cold air, great sound system and dash computer that is really nifty. The computer can calculate instantaneous gas mileage for any given moment as well as averages over different driving conditions. This makes the predominant negative feature of this vehicle so painfully obvious. The gas mileage is just horrible- 10-ish for stop and go city driving and maybe 14 or 15 on the freeway.
Story
I had been driving (and loving) a Honda Civic for many years when my Dad passed away. I inherited his ride. I didn't get rid of it, as I enjoyed the safer and more comfortable ride. I put my Honda in the garage. Of late, I have come to realize that what it was costing to drive the Grand Marquis was just too much. Plus, I felt guilty about the environmental impact of driving a gas guzzler. I to... (more)
Pros
So comfortable to drive. Very roomy, has that living room feel with all driving amenities close at hand. It just feels like a really safe, solid ride. I would say that the on-board computer is my favorite feature on this car, able to accurately calculate moment-to-moment and average fuel economy as well as distance to empty
Cons
This vehicle is not maintenance-free by any means. The big engine needs to be tuned fairly regularly and this is not easy or inexpensive. I have found that as the vehicle ages, even with regular maintenance, the gas mileage has steadily deteriorated. This has been quite easy to determine, as the on-board computer keeps accurate track of such things.

2000 Mercury Grand Marquis - Of 25 cars I have owned, it is, overall, the best.

It is a roomy car with plenty of space for family and has a pleasing appearance that looks like an American car. It is a dependable car and has a very nice ride. The style was kept the same for over ten years, so it did not look out-moded over time. The fuel economy was remarkable with a full size, and the powerful V-8 would regularly get over 30 miles per gallon for a trip on cruise control. I drove over 100,000 trouble-free miles in comfort and felt safe. I live in the rust belt, and the car did not rust out so must have had good coatings.
Story
While driving from New Hampshire to home, the kids fell asleep in the car and looked very cute and adorable.
Pros
Comfortable ride. Controls easy to manage. Remarkable fuel economy on trips (topped 30mpg) and pretty good around town as well. Last of the full-size, rear-wheel drive American cars. Good power V-8 engine.
Cons
Small recurring electrical glitch in power door locks. Trunk was large but oddly shaped, and made it hard to pack in luggage in an efficient manner.
