The Nissan Xterra is the ideal vehicle for getting around town, but also for camping and hauling. It's easy to get in and out of it with everything from a small purse to a great Dane. The vehicle has great clearance for those surprise snow storms and tall speed bumps. A step up from any car. Nissan builds great cars and SUVs, but the Xterra specifically goes everywhere I need it too and is easy to maintain. The vehicle can go the distance of a log road trip with gas mileage to rival similar vehicles. This is the first vehicle that I have bought and refuse to sell. The Xterra is a versatile and life long vehicle. It will be neigh impossible to get me to part with this vehicle. I love the bare bones set up and my ability to customize everything from the towing package to the stereo syste... (more)
Story
During a hailstorm on a child's first camping trip, we were able to put down the back seats and play four rounds of go fish in the warmth and safety of the vehicle. The space allowed us to all be comfortable with plenty of room. This feature saved the child's first camping experience by keeping us warm and safe.
Pros
The overall as well as cargo space/size of the vehicle is perfect. The cargo space has many loops and netting hooks to allow for a wide variety of configurations with both back seats up or down. The car is street and mountain friendly while still being compact and aerodynamic.
Cons
The accessories, like the pet guard are not very flexible and it can be hard to locate the accessories for the vehicle without going directly to the dealership. I prefer to help out a local shop for my upgrades.

I have owned this vehicle since it was new, so it has been my primary vehicle for the last six years. Overall, the Xterra is reliable, I have not had any unusual issues. The Xterra is a great looking SUV, it definitely stands out from the crowd a bit without looking garish. The Xterra is pretty tough and has stood up well to its many roles, hauling kids, lumber, pets, and luggage. Overall I am pleased with the Xterra but given my growing family, will probably have to do some time in a minivan before I can drive a car of my own choice again.
Pros
As I mentioned, the styling of the car is an asset. The stock radio is pretty basic, so I upgraded mine to a radio that could stream Bluetooth for about 250 dollars. On the flip side, the lack of lots of bells and whistles reduces the number of things that can and will eventually break.
Cons
The fuel mileage is pretty awful. I am lucky to average about 15 miles per gallon unless I am doing a sustained highway road trip, which might push 20 mpg. These are near the estimates, so its not much of surprise, but as current cars improve vastly, fueling up every week can get old. The other potentially negative issue with this vehicle is a technical but potentially devastating issue. A substantial number of Xterras suffered from a failure of the transmission cooler (which is routed through the radiator). The intermix of coolant and transmission fluid destroys both the radiator and tran... (more)
