2013 Nissan Xterra - I am happy with the vehicle

The Nissan Xterra was exactly what I was looking for when I was deciding on a new vehicle. I got the Sport model which I think is the lowest level package but it has everything I need. The vehicle has four wheel drive that can be engaged while traveling. The skid indicated picks up on the slightest slide and it has been helpful during winter months while traveling on black ice surfaces. The back is the perfect size for my dog once I remove the cargo tray. The removal and re-installation of the cargo tray is very easy. I just have to unscrew two screws. It does drive like a truck because it is on a Nissan Frontier platform so I would not characterize this as a luxury SUV. The vehicle is also surrounded by airbags. There are curtain bags in the back. The headrests are a little awkward at... (more)
Story
My dog and I drove down the entire east coast of the United States together last year. We hit all kinds of weather but the vehicle handled it all with ease. My dog is a pit bull so it is hard to find lodging on the road sometimes. We slept at rest stops in the back together. I was able to put out my sleeping bag and he was able to sleep on his bed. We had lots of room. The was a really fun tri... (more)
Pros
One The positive things about this vehicle include the four wheel drive. It helps to get through winters in New York. Being able to turn on the feature while in motion is also very helpful at times especially when there is little notice to rough terrain. The storage capacity of this vehicle has also been a great perk of ownership. The back seats lay flat to create more storage space. There is enough room in the back to transport an assembled propane grill! The roof racks are very sturdy and make transport easy. The running boards make for easy elderly access. My favorite feature of the veh... (more)
Cons
There are a few cons to this vehicle. The back doors are oddly shaped. The way the doors are attached sort of causes a narrow opening. This makes it hard for a regular sized adult to get in and out of the vehicle. As mentioned above, the factory installed headlights are very bright. While I appreciate it, other drivers do not. It could also be that they head lights are higher than a car so they are in the oncoming traffic's line of vision. The gas mileage really sucks. The listed mileage is 15 city and 20 highway. That is contingent on other factors like how often the owner rotates and per... (more)

The Nissan Xterra is new to me, but so far it seems to be a reliable vehicle. I find it comfortable for a short daily commute of 12 miles to work and it has a strong engine. The body style of the first generation is almost 10 years old and it's hard to tell the year difference between a 2004 and a 2014 model. The only difference is the style of the headlights - the 2004 is round where the newer versions are square. I'm not sure if the interior design is different but it really doesn't matter much to me. With the way it runs at 120,000 miles, I'm sure to get another 60K easy without very much maintenance issues to worry about. I did a review of the vehicle before purchase and based the purchase on reliability factor and dependability and looks and style. Cargo space was also a fa... (more)
Story
I have enjoyed the commute it does what the vehicle purchased intended. Not too flashy and just enough for its need. Hold a ton of trash which I took to the dump I was pleased.
Pros
Reliability of the vehicle so far after four months of ownership seems to be very good. The basic controls and functions in the interior mean you really won't have to worry that too much wear or malfunctions will occur. The look of the vehicle was not changed until the second generation, so the vehicle may be 10 years old but it doesn't look like it is. The styling is nice and has a sleek low profile for a SUV, not overly crowding on the road.
Cons
The vehicle has a defect in the plastic on the center console and the right side passenger area dash. Multiple hairline cracks in the same area on three of the vehicles tested had them in the same spots. The interior is very basic and could have a better styling to make it more modern. If you are looking for something more fancy, this vehicle is not for you.

The Nissan Xterra is the ideal vehicle for getting around town, but also for camping and hauling. It's easy to get in and out of it with everything from a small purse to a great Dane. The vehicle has great clearance for those surprise snow storms and tall speed bumps. A step up from any car. Nissan builds great cars and SUVs, but the Xterra specifically goes everywhere I need it too and is easy to maintain. The vehicle can go the distance of a log road trip with gas mileage to rival similar vehicles. This is the first vehicle that I have bought and refuse to sell. The Xterra is a versatile and life long vehicle. It will be neigh impossible to get me to part with this vehicle. I love the bare bones set up and my ability to customize everything from the towing package to the stereo syste... (more)
Story
During a hailstorm on a child's first camping trip, we were able to put down the back seats and play four rounds of go fish in the warmth and safety of the vehicle. The space allowed us to all be comfortable with plenty of room. This feature saved the child's first camping experience by keeping us warm and safe.
Pros
The overall as well as cargo space/size of the vehicle is perfect. The cargo space has many loops and netting hooks to allow for a wide variety of configurations with both back seats up or down. The car is street and mountain friendly while still being compact and aerodynamic.
Cons
The accessories, like the pet guard are not very flexible and it can be hard to locate the accessories for the vehicle without going directly to the dealership. I prefer to help out a local shop for my upgrades.
