The Nissan Xterra is the ideal vehicle for getting around town, but also for camping and hauling. It's easy to get in and out of it with everything from a small purse to a great Dane. The vehicle has great clearance for those surprise snow storms and tall speed bumps. A step up from any car. Nissan builds great cars and SUVs, but the Xterra specifically goes everywhere I need it too and is easy to maintain. The vehicle can go the distance of a log road trip with gas mileage to rival similar vehicles. This is the first vehicle that I have bought and refuse to sell. The Xterra is a versatile and life long vehicle. It will be neigh impossible to get me to part with this vehicle. I love the bare bones set up and my ability to customize everything from the towing package to the stereo syste... (more)
Story
During a hailstorm on a child's first camping trip, we were able to put down the back seats and play four rounds of go fish in the warmth and safety of the vehicle. The space allowed us to all be comfortable with plenty of room. This feature saved the child's first camping experience by keeping us warm and safe.
Pros
The overall as well as cargo space/size of the vehicle is perfect. The cargo space has many loops and netting hooks to allow for a wide variety of configurations with both back seats up or down. The car is street and mountain friendly while still being compact and aerodynamic.
Cons
The accessories, like the pet guard are not very flexible and it can be hard to locate the accessories for the vehicle without going directly to the dealership. I prefer to help out a local shop for my upgrades.

I love driving the Nissan Xterra! The body is great, and I sit up so high that I feel safe when driving this vehicle. The car handles really well. It is responsive and it also has a great turn radius. The greatest use we have had out of the car is the ability it has to tow. We have taken large trailers in order to help move many things out of house. It helped us to move our washer and dryer when we bought it. The car also looks very nice. The only problem is truly the gas mileage. Because it is an older vehicle and it is an SUV, it eats up gas like crazy! We only get about 15 miles per gallon. This is made even worse when we are towing something with the car. If it got better gas mileage, we would drive it more often. It really is more fun to drive! Also, you do not need... (more)
Story
We moved a lot of furniture from southern California to Nevada. This was the first time we needed to drive with a large trailer. It is scary to drive with such a long trailer, but the car handled it very well. We almost got pulled over for going too fast while towing a trailer!
Pros
- Towing capacity --> We can tow the largest trailer U-Haul offers with no problems - Safety --> You are high up when you drive - Control --> The car has a great turn radius - Style --> It is a great looking car! - Storage --> There is a storage rack above and a large trunk
Cons
- Gas Mileage --> Poor, approximately 15 miles per gallon - Storage --> The seats in the back do not lay flat

I have really enjoyed my Nissan Xterra to date. I purchased it used in 2010 and have since put on about 90,000 miles taking it all over North America. It has had it's share of issues (some of which were hidden by the dealer I purchased it from) but nothing major that has made me regret the purchase. It is capable both on road and off. Gas mileage is not terrible, but definitely not that great, either. There's lots of space inside for gear, equipment, people and pets. In fact, my dog loves the truck. She has lots of room in the back seat or back cargo area. The vehicle has lots of options for customization/upgrades, including lots of off-road equipment. The interior is comfortable, but not flashy. You won't find too many bells and whistles, just a rugged, bare bones interior. You wouldn... (more)
Story
I took this vehicle on many, many camping trips. One time while sleeping in the spacious interior, I heard a scratching on the roof of the truck. I sat up and listened but could not figure out what was making the noise. I leaned into the drivers seat and turned the headlights on just in time to see a porcupine slide down the windshield and jump off the hood of the truck.
Pros
Very capable off-road. Very spacious interior. Lots of customization options inside and out. Very easy to store equipment on and in this vehicle, including bikes, kayaks and/or skis. Very dog friendly! Easy to clean out. Capable and reliable engine and transmission.
Cons
Gas mileage is not that great. Ride is comfortable but not luxurious. Interior scratches easily (who cares?). Some parts seem less reliable than others (have had issues with rear differentials). A/C broke at 90k miles.
