I was "sold" on the vehicle after watching a TV show review. I love that the vehicle has plenty of airbags for safety and that the SUV is built on a car frame which makes it more nimble. The quality of the engine and the fact that I have over 175,000 miles and never had any issues is another reason I purchased a Toyota. I specifically bought an SUV to have to ability to "haul" a lot of things and also have room for passengers. I have moved furniture and boxes and even slept in the back with the seats down while camping. Being a 6-cylinder, it has great pep, which is essential for freeway driving. I am fine with the gas mileage of 23 mpg since I get everything else I want from the vehicle. And yes, it does look somewhat like a mini van and I have been asked if I have kids by people who ... Story
We backed into a drive-in movie theater, put the seats down in the back, lifted the back and watched the movie from within the car, lying on our stomachs.
Pros
The quality and the reliability are right up there on the list. Toyota has earned this reputation for a reason, because their vehicles keep going and going. I haven't ever had any engine issues. Functionality, for an SUV, is definitely the number one reason for buying in my case. I want the freedom to buy and transport a couch to my home if I want as well as have seating for 5 other people. The 6-cylinders make accelerating when needed a pleasure and allow for towing capability. I really like some of the extras it came with like running boards and roof rack. Controls are very intuitive; I ... (more)
Cons
The few drawbacks to this vehicle are the plastic parts like the door handles, visors and small compartment doors within the vehicle. They are cheaply made and do not withstand the test of time like the engine does. I have had the electric door window motor fail and the air conditioning control knob break. Also, the clear sealant coat on the exterior paint is pealing off in many places. With the vehicle being 14 years old, wear and tear should be expected. But then again if the engine can go for 400,000 hopefully the surrounding pieces can last too, or what's the point? The biggest drawbac... (more)

I have a 2002 Toyota Highlander. I purchased this car because I wanted an SUV to drive my family around. We often have guests, so I wanted a vehicle that would fit at least five people. I chose a Toyota due to its quality reputation. I have had this car for over 12 years and have had very few problems with it. The transmission and other parts have held up well. I only have 110,000 miles on this car. This car has a tow package and I use it to haul a small pop-up trailer. This car has the power to tow my trailer with no problems. One thing I like about the Toyota Highlander is the ample storage area in the back. I have fitted trees, lumber and other items in the back and used the fold-down seats to easily haul large items back to my house. The car is fitted with luggage racks on top, whi... (more)
Story
I have used my Highlander for many camping trips. I have slept inside and folded down the seats to accommodate my large frame.
Pros
I am happy with the gas mileage, the room for passengers and storage.
Cons
I cannot think of any cons. I have been very happy with the car.
