99 Toyota Corolla - reliability defined.
The 99 Toyota Corolla. True to the Japanese manufacturer's history of manufacturing reliable vehicles, the 99' Toyota Corolla is one of the most by-the-numbers, non-offensive, well-priced sedans to this day. This car is not for the type of person that likes to show off their ride-- rather, this car is for the type of person that wants a dependable, well-built machine to get from point A to point B. The four-cylinder engine is average in terms of performance for its time, enough to get up to speed on busy highways. Upholstery is average, a faux velvet colored beige, with darker carpeted floors and accompanying floor mats. Said upholstery has lasted a ridiculously long time, too-- I've tacked on nearly 200k miles and only just now am I seeing standard wear and tear. Comfort may be an issue for taller folks if you have four people riding along, as the interior space is usually just ""good enough"". Power steering and power windows are included by default. Gas mileage is a fairly impressive 21 city/31 highway, a greater value than even some modern-day sedans. Electronics have held up considerably well. All dash lights still function well around 200k miles, along with cruise control. You should be able to upgrade your speakers from the slightly tin-y stocks, as there's enough room in the trunk for the required accessories, and a new radio to accompany. This has been the best luxury upgrade I've given my 99' Toyota Corolla, as the long rides I take it on are perfect for listening to entire high quality albums the whole way through. After all the mention of what seems like a pure average vehicle, why do I love my 99' Toyota Corolla so much? She. Does. Not. Break. Down. This vehicle never gives up as long as you treat her well. Change her oil every 4k miles, have a safety and break inspection every 20k, don't rev the engine like a sports car, and you'll have what might be the single best bang-for-your-buck vehicle available on the market today.

Worse Toyota I've ever owned is still a great car
I've only ever owned Toyota cars. They're not for everyone, but if reliability, low maintenance and efficiency is what you are looking for, Toyota is tops. I bought this car new 20 years ago! It's the first and only new car I've ever owned (I had owned two used Toyota's before that: a Tercel and a Corolla). I was fresh out of college and had my first real job, so I figured, what the heck, time for my first new car. I have no regrets, but a few disappointments. First, I bought this car at the time many car makers were experimenting with water-based paints. My Corolla turned out to be one of those experiments. I only found out about 8 years later when the topcoat started to peal over the trunk and part of the roof. It continued to peal eventually reaching the paint, then the bare metal (it also spread to the bonnet). For most cars, 8 years is a lifetime, but a Toyota hasn't even hit midlife yet. The next issue I had was a Transmission issue at 70,000 miles. That is unheard of for a Toyota. It cost me $1,500: I really believe I must have got a lemon. The last issue I had was the fabric headliner pealing after 17 years. I guess I shouldn't complain, but it's a real pain to change that thing. Other than those issues, I've never had any other issues: just put gas in it, change the oil, brakes and tires when needed. It's been a great little car for a frugal non-car lover like myself (I really don't care if I never own a car again, as long as I can conveniently get from A to B; I can't wait for self-driving, all electric, Toyota Ubers! ).
