I purchased this 2002 GMC truck in May, 2017 after a lengthy search. This truck was purchased new by an elderly man who used it primarily to pull a travel trailer to the south for much of the year. It had a total accumulated mileage of 114,000 when I located the car out of my home state of Maine. The truck was exceedingly well equipped to the extent that my mechanic and I agree the truck had been specially ordered as equipped rather than just purchased off the new vehicle lot when new. It had all the equipment that I wanted or needed and was well equipped for towing long distance. It is an extended cab truck with 6 1/2 foot bed; is powered by the medium sized engine. It was in exceptional overall condition and I was particularly pleased to see evidence of its service history in the doc... (more)
Story
My wife and I are looking for property to build our retirement home on. We were in a remote area of the state and wanted to look at a particular parcel but had to cross a deep gully off the edge of the road and follow a rough rocky road about 300 feet to where we needed to go. I merely pushed four wheel drive on the selector and eased off the road then up over the dirt berm and over the rough ... (more)
Pros
The truck is equipped with a 5.3 liter V8 engine which has more than sufficient power and returns in my normal daily use around 16 miles per gallon. Considering our planned 13,000 miles per year, the daily gasoline cost is more an acceptable considering the size nature of the vehicle. The truck has a four wheel drive system that is kept primarily in two wheel drive. However in winter the four wheel drive will prove of great use. The system can be left in "automatic" and will use four wheel drive only when needed, or changes in and out of four wheel drive, or from low to high range are mad... (more)
Cons
During the past 4 1/2 months of ownership, I have logged almost 6000 miles on this truck. To date I have found no cause for complaint: the truck runs exceedingly well, gets good fuel mileage and is still relatively tight, considering that it is fifteen years old and has around 120,000 miles. Since it has never "enjoyed" a northern Maine winter with our exceptionally rough secondary roads, the truck appears as new.

2002 GMC Sierra 1500 - Excellent vehicle for my purpose.

We decided to go back to one vehicle. The ideal vehicle was thought to be an extended cab, 4X4 pickup. Based on previous experience we searched for and chose a fully optioned 15 year old, low mileage GMC. The search wasn't easy and included hours on the Internet and several trips out of state. The vehicle chosen was used to tow a travel trailer south for winters and winter use here in New England was minimal. This was important as rust is an issue with all older vehicles here with our harsh winters. This truck is well equipped, including heated seats which are important to my wife. The truck is in outstanding cosmetic and mechanical condition as it was a one-owner vehicle.
Story
In our search for our truck we made two trips to Massachusetts to look at vehicles we thought might be the right one. These trips totaled more than 500 miles round trip in each day. It has been some years since my wife and I drove in Boston traffic and during those years some of the city's traffic patterns have changed considerably. On the first trip we had a chance to travel beneath the city ... (more)
Pros
The truck is fully equipped for towing trailers, but the smaller V8 engine offers ample power with pretty good fuel economy. Remembering that the vehicle is a truck, it's comfortable to drive in our normal need for such a vehicle and the extended cab allows ample storage for our monthly major shopping trips to markets 50 miles distant. While the bed is only 6.5 feet long, it is ample for our large-item hauling needs. At $8500, the purchase price of this truck was roughly 14% of the cost of a new truck with similar equipment. This truck has 114,000 miles and I expect it to perform well for ... (more)
Cons
The truck is quite tall off the ground and will require the fitting of running boards to help my wife climb up and into the vehicle.
