Biggest tip I can give is avoid driving as much as possible. Public transport may not be the fastest but you can focus on more important things that driving. On top of that if more people used public transit when possible the rush hour traffic would be very easy to drive in for those who must drive to and from work.
There are a few towns near and around Hayward, each one has its own type of dealerships. Depending on what you want I would say, stick with a dealership. A shady dealership is still better than a shady person.
Morning commutes into San Francisco is fun. I normally take the 101 to get straight there. But on occasion I'll take a scenic route like taking the 1 and merging into the 280. It takes about 45 minutes longer than normal. It is a long drive but it sure has a view.
101. For work commutes it is a direct route and not normally backed up like alternate route. The moon shining on the bay is a beautiful way to end the day.

I would say you don't have to worry about looking for a gas station because they have a lot of those on this street.
I would say craigslist because they you pay way cheaper than a car dealership. only problem is that it may not pass smog but you have to use your good judgement to ensure you make a good deal.
I love driving around this city because there are a lot of places you can eat. They have a lot of restaurants and fast food places.
Hesperian Blvd. Hesperian Blvd because it's connected to Union City, San Lorenzo, and San Leandro so it's close to everything. Hesperian Blvd has a mall and a lot of stores and places to eat.
