Picked up my cherry red Honda CR-V when it was already about 5 years old. I was not expecting much, but it has become my old friend in the last 8 years. It has required shockingly little maintenance and has sailed through yearly inspections with little, if any, parts needed. The space in it has been great for kids and dogs as well as filling up the back for long trips to my parents' lake house. It has proven easy to clean, despite the dogs and the kids. It still looks good after 8 years and still gets pretty good mileage, although that might be due to a lot of the driving being highway driving.
Story
Not long after getting the car, I hit a deer coming back home. Not having the money at the time to immediately repair it and not wanting to go through my insurance (didn't want them to raise my rates), I was still driving the car 3 months after the deer and still doing well. It was dented up pretty good in the grill and hood, but kept me getting to work every day until I was able to get everyt... (more)
Pros
The CR-V has a lot of space, especially when the seats are down or out. It has decent gas mileage, and it has kept on going for almost a decade since I got it (when it was already 5 years old). I've really been surprised as I expected a used car would need a lot more maintenance and would need a lot more parts replaced. With only a few (cheap) odds and ends over the years, it's still runs great.
Cons
The car lets in a fair amount of road noise. If and when I get my next car, I'd like one that is a little quieter when I drive with a better sound system.

2005 Honda CR-V - A pleasant surprise!

I was never planning to own a Honda CR-V -- I inherited it when my mother passed away. Dealing with an emotional situation like that is hard enough, and when time came to divide up her assets, I was ready to sell the vehicle and wash my hands of it. Am I ever glad I didn't! After driving it for just a few days, I knew it would be a great vehicle for my family and me! Thanks, Mom!
Story
My mom had already known she had little time to live when she chose this vehicle (8 months before she died). She knew it would be mine eventually, and I know she considered that when making her selection. It's turned out to be a great surprise, and I think of my mom every time I drive it.
Pros
Safety is huge for me. I am a single mom who lives in Duluth, MN. It's a city on a steep hill - winter driving can be terrifying, especially with young children, and I've witnessed (and experienced) my share of auto accidents. I've never felt safer than when I've driven my CR-V (and it's not the first SUV I've owned). It's spacious enough to give everyone their own space, but not so big that I feel as if I'm driving a bus. The rear storage/transport area is deceivingly large, and I love the pop-up table -- what an unexpected surprise!
Cons
One thing that comes to mind is that there is no headlight beam/brightness indicator. I've actually gotten pulled over for driving with my "brights" on and I had no idea... Another con I see in this vehicle is the location of the gear shift. Mounted on the dash to the right of the steering wheel, it's unusual and sort of awkward, but it's not a deal-breaker. Replacement keys are also outrageously expensive (I was told they could only be purchased from a dealer).
