2005 Honda CR-V - A pleasant surprise!

I was never planning to own a Honda CR-V -- I inherited it when my mother passed away. Dealing with an emotional situation like that is hard enough, and when time came to divide up her assets, I was ready to sell the vehicle and wash my hands of it. Am I ever glad I didn't! After driving it for just a few days, I knew it would be a great vehicle for my family and me! Thanks, Mom!
Story
My mom had already known she had little time to live when she chose this vehicle (8 months before she died). She knew it would be mine eventually, and I know she considered that when making her selection. It's turned out to be a great surprise, and I think of my mom every time I drive it.
Pros
Safety is huge for me. I am a single mom who lives in Duluth, MN. It's a city on a steep hill - winter driving can be terrifying, especially with young children, and I've witnessed (and experienced) my share of auto accidents. I've never felt safer than when I've driven my CR-V (and it's not the first SUV I've owned). It's spacious enough to give everyone their own space, but not so big that I feel as if I'm driving a bus. The rear storage/transport area is deceivingly large, and I love the pop-up table -- what an unexpected surprise!
Cons
One thing that comes to mind is that there is no headlight beam/brightness indicator. I've actually gotten pulled over for driving with my "brights" on and I had no idea... Another con I see in this vehicle is the location of the gear shift. Mounted on the dash to the right of the steering wheel, it's unusual and sort of awkward, but it's not a deal-breaker. Replacement keys are also outrageously expensive (I was told they could only be purchased from a dealer).

This car has been extremely reliable the entire time I've owned it and starts without fail despite being habitually parked outside in a cold climate. The upholstery is high quality, and the interior still looks quite new after more than a decade of use. I've never had any trouble with the engine or electronic components. The only downside is that the airbags have been recalled, requiring multiple trips to dealerships to have them replaced. Fortunately, I've never been in an accident, but it does upset me that if I had, it might have resulted in a fatality.
Story
I remember once when I spent the weekend with friends at a cabin near Lake Superior in winter. We decided to go for pancakes one icy morning, and my car was the only one that would start in the sub-zero temperatures.
Pros
I love that this car always starts without fail after over a decade of driving, even when it has been parked outside overnight in very low temperatures. I'm not the best at parking, but this car is very compact for a sport-utility vehicle and easy to maneuver, even into tight spaces. Yet the car has a lot of storage space for a smaller SUV. The build and interior also feel high-quality, and the car still looks almost new both outside and inside.
Cons
The main negative of this vehicle were the recalled airbags. More than the inconvenience of having to take the car to the dealership multiple times to have them replaced, was the realization that I or a member of my family could have been hurt if we'd been in an accident during all the years we owned it before the recall. Another much more minor downside is that it seems to have larger than usual blind spots because of the design of the rear windows.
