Our 2008 Honda CR-V EX-L has been a great family car for us. It is the primary vehicle that my wife drives. The car has good visibility out of it and the seat has a wide range of adjustment so that shorter people (like my wife) can adjust the car for easy and safe driving. We have never had the car in for any major repairs. It has only needed routine maintenance such as fluid and filter changes. The Honda CR-V has plenty of safety features for being a smaller SUV. There are front and side air bags, for example. I can also mention that the AWD makes this car able to go in any snowfall equal to or less than the car's ground clearance. And to be more clear about the AWD capability, I have never had the car get stuck in ice either. It gets just enough traction from the AWD to always escape... (more)
Story
One year we drove our Honda CR-V to the beach for vacation. It was crowded, and we put on a roof rack and cargo bag to hold some extra items. We made it just fine, and during our week at the beach we found out the Honda CR-V's AWD is really good on beach sand!
Pros
The reliability is the top positive feature of this vehicle, and the minimal requirement for any significant repairs. The car can easily get the advertised fuel mileage, and I can usually beat the specified highway mileage when on an uncrowded interstate highway. Our model came with XM/Sirius capability built-in, and that has been enjoyable on the road. The rear seats fold down to make the cargo area much larger, and this has come in handy a few times to carry larger items. It adds to the overall flexibility of the vehicle. I have found the available power from the engine to be always more... (more)
Cons
At times we have needed a vehicle with a little extra room for cargo. So obviously if we had chosen a larger vehicle we would have that room - probably at the cost of fuel mileage. I have observed that any service you have done at the Honda dealership is quite expensive, and parts can be more expensive than other brands of cars. There is probably less difference in parts prices now than there had been 15-20 years ago, and to be honest dealerships are nearly all the same in terms of trying to maximize profits.
