We absolutely love our Honda Pilot. We purchased it because we were adding another kid to our family and couldn't be happier. The three car seats fit perfectly across the middle seat for when we are going on trips and need to store our luggage in the back. We've never had a problem with it that we've needed repairs though we keep up basic maintenance such as tire rotations and oil changes. It drives great in the snow but does well in the high heat of the summer as well.
Story
We packed up our car, our three children and headed out on a road trip. 5 National parks or monuments, 3 special exhibits or museums and 4 states in 5 days. We had a blast, took a ton of pictures and earned many junior ranger badges. Our car was the perfect place to crawl back into after a long hike and head on to the next place. The kids could sleep comfortably in the back and have plenty of ... (more)
Pros
The storage in the vehicle is amazing--the console for the extras in the front seat, side pockets on each of the doors and plenty of drink holders throughout the car. We love that we can fold down the back seats and still fit our three car seats across the middle and have room for all the luggage when we go on road trips. We love that we can fit eight passengers comfortably so we can haul all our kids' friends around town. The option to record a cd into the database in the car is wonderful! No more hauling cds around for us.
Cons
There is not a whole lot of luggage space when all the seats are up. If there were just a few more inches of room, it would be better..

My Pilot is such a wonderful vehicle! It's no 4 wheeling vehicle, by any means, but it will get you unstuck in almost any situation. There's enough room for 8 and it rides great. I would not recommend getting it in black; I don't know if it's the quality of Honda's paint or us, but it seems to chip easily. It is a solid SUV; shutting the door is a solid sound and it is very safe. Honda's vehicles are made to last, so hopefully, with proper care, we can be an owner to make it to 300,000+ on the mileage. Speaking of mileage, we average about 23 mpg, with city/highway driving.
Story
Trying to test out the pilot in the snow and trying to make the car slide. My husband was driving and I was terrified in the passenger seat. Lo and behold, the car wouldn't slide (he was in control). I was happy and my husband was disappointed (in a good way) that the VTM worked perfectly, so he couldn't scare me while trying to do doughnuts.
Pros
Build quality; comfort in all 3 rows, tri-zone heating and air conditioning; can fit 3 car seats across the middle seat; storage/cubbyholes throughout; VTM all wheel drive; resale value; integrated backup camera in rearview mirror instead of where the radio is, like most cars; information display to keep you from guessing what's going on with your vehicle; it's a Honda; will likely be a solid running vehicle when our daughter is 16 (9 years from now)
Cons
A little bit more power would always be nice; front cup holders can be more durable (ours are damaged from holding warm coffee); better mileage, though it's not terrible; bigger trunk when all seats are up; better headlights-LED; 4WD option (like a 4runner)

Some of the things I really like about this vehicle are the keyless entry and the push button start. I love that I opted for the entertainment systems and navigation. The vehicle drives very smooth, as well. The leather is soft and seats are very comfortable. The 3rd row is easy for the kids to get in and out of, and they seem to love the vehicle, as well. I opted for the white which makes the truck look classy and smart at the same time. It gives me the feeling of being young again. There are a few features of the truck that I'm not 100% loving. One of the main ones is when you have the car stopped at a red light or a stop sign, the car turns off and restarts when you go. This sometimes can make it feel like the car is stalling and hesitant. You can turn the feature off, but you have... (more)
Story
One scary/not so funny story when I first got this truck was I had an appointment at the hair dressers, and when I tried parking the truck I thought for sure I put the brakes on, but for whatever reason the truck did not go into park. It rather flew forward and drove straight up an incline in the landscape at the hairdressers parking lot. I thought I had hit the large rock that was in the land... (more)
Pros
Entertainment system navigation handling size color
Cons
Idle Stop Lane drifting blind spot

Honda Pilot Generations

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV that is designed to appeal to those who need a vehicle with ample seating and cargo space as well as good handling and traction. It is Honda's largest SUV overall and is known to have good overall safety and reliability ratings. The Pilot was first introduced to the U.S. market for the 2003 model year and it is currently in its third generation. Each new version has brought with it changes to technology, trim levels, size, safety and overall style.

2016 – 2019 (3rd Generation)

The third-generation Pilot has an overall sleeker design compared to the more square shape of the earlier generation. The exterior includes LED headlights and daytime running lights as well as 20-inch tires on some models. This generation is larger overall than before, yet it weighs 300 pounds less. The direct-injected, 3.5-liter V6 engine has 280 horsepower, an increase of 30 over the previous generation. Its gas mileage is about two miles per gallon better for city, highway and combined ratings than previous models. Two transmissions are available: a six-speed automatic on the more basic trims and a nine-speed automatic in the higher-end trims. Buyers can choose from all-wheel-drive or front-wheel-drive.

In 2016, a new Elite trim was introduced at the top of the Pilot lineup. It features a variety of premium features including rain-sensing wipers, LED projector headlights, and a panoramic sunroof among others.

Below the Elite are the Touring, EX-L, EX and LX trim lines.

Several safety upgrades, including a passenger side mirror camera, blind-spot and rear-cross traffic monitoring, and optional lane departure warning system are included in several types of trims. A multi-angle backup camera is standard on all models for even more visibility.

Adaptive cruise control and a forward collision warning system help you maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

For the 2019 model year, Honda made subtle tweaks to the Pilot. The headlights and taillights were updated slightly, a hands-free tailgate, updated infotainment system and new rear entertainment system were added to some trims. The interior was also upgraded with more room for passengers and cargo.

2009 – 2015 (2nd Generation)

The second generation has a 3.5-liter V6 VTEC engine with 250 horsepower with a five-speed automatic transmission in all models. The gearshift for these models was moved from the steering column to the center console for easier shifting and convenience. The engine retains the Honda variable cylinder management system of the previous generation. EPA fuel mileage estimates for this generation is 23mpg on the highway while the all-wheel-drive version gets 22mpg. All Pilot models include anti-lock brakes and traction control for safety and handling.

This generation also picked up a driver's seat position memory function that can be programmed for two different people. A powered rear tailgate makes loading and unloading the cargo area easier. There are four basic models to this generation, LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring.

Some trim types include premium features such as a satellite navigation system, power moonroof, and tri-zone climate control for both comfort and safety.

In 2013, a new backup camera system was introduced in all models. Hand-free calling also became available that year. Additional safety features include vehicle stability assist, traction control, and side-impact airbags.

2003 – 2008 (1st Generation)

The first-generation Honda Pilot has three different engines throughout its lifespan. The model was originally introduced with a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 240 horsepower for the 2003 and 2004 model years.

In 2005, the engine was upgraded with minor improvements which boosted the horsepower to 255. From 2003-2005, all vehicles included a variable torque management four-wheel drive system. This system allowed the driver to lock the rear differential to deal with slippage in low-speed situations and in certain gears by pushing a button in the dashboard.

In 2006, buyers had the option of choosing a four-wheel drive or a front-wheel-drive version, both with a 244-horsepower engine, and the variable torque management system was retired. This new engine also came with the Honda variable cylinder management system. This system allows the six-cylinder engine to operate in a four or three cylinder mode for added fuel efficiency. Every vehicle in this generation has a five-speed automatic transmission.

The Pilot was originally designed with three rows of seats and claimed it could fit up to eight people. However, the third seat may be too small to accommodate larger passengers, especially on long trips. The middle and rear rows can be folded down flat for extra cargo space. The suspension is composed of struts and coils in the front and a multi-link suspension with a wide track making for easy loading and transporting of cargo as well as for passenger comfort. A DVD system with separate audio channels is available with some trim levels, but, due to limited space, you can't have both the DVD system and a navigation system at the same time.
