This is the best car I have ever owned in my life. It isn't a value vehicle, meaning I didn't pay bottom dollar for it. But it isn't nearly as expensive as other popular vehicles on the market. I bought the five-speed manual transmission and love how it drives. It hugs turns and can make quick movements when I need it to, during those crazy rush hour commutes. I live in an urban east coast area and can fit it into most small parking spaces and tiny streets. Upkeep on the car isn't ridiculously expensive, and replacement parts aren't too expensive either. If properly maintained and fluids changed on a regular schedule, this car will last a very long time. I am at 120,000 miles, and it shows no signs of slowing down. I haven't had many expensive replacements occur over the course of owni... (more)
Story
Driving across country and going to a variety of national parks. I have used this vehicle for car camping more times than I can count.
Pros
Reliability. Solid build and performance. Doesn't lose pep with age or feel sluggish.
Cons
Maybe not the best in snow conditions.

The VW Golf is a fantastic little car. It has plenty of power, even for the base model, and feels remarkably solid in comparison to other cars in its price bracket. The experience of purchasing from VW is also quite good, as they take care of a great many of the maintenance tasks without charging any additional fees for the first few years of ownership.
Story
I remember driving through the countryside with friends on a starry night, when we realized the sky was glowing oddly. We pulled over to watch the aurora overhead, the first time any of us had ever seen it. Lovely!
Pros
The car is sporty and solid, without being showy. With seats down, it has plenty of storage for your average weekend warrior mountain biker. Everything feels well-considered and high quality, unlike many of the cars in its price bracket, which add many bells and whistles that are gimmicky and chintzy.
Cons
The car really is pretty great, but I've run into a couple of snags. The body panels are showing a bit of rust at only 8 years of age, though I do live in a location with harsh winters. I've also had to replace the brake calipers twice over the years, as they have failed and no longer work smoothly. This never led to a dangerous situation, but it was noisy and unnerving, and did cost a fair amount of money to repair.
