This little car is pretty damned amazing. My wife and I have owned it for 3 years total now, and we have put in a little over 40,000 miles on it with very few issues besides standard maintenance stuff. Between the both of us, on some days we will put in 100 miles or so in one day. She uses it for school, and I will use it for my delivery job, and it still is going pretty hard. It runs on diesel, so it gets very good mileage. The golf TDIs are known for their power and excellent braking and crash test ratings. As far as the mileage, in town we get roughly forty three miles to the gallon, and on the free-way, sometimes we will average up to fifty. It may seem small, but it is surprisingly roomy inside. I love the look people get on their faces too when we pull up to the diesel pump and s... (more)
Story
We took it on a camping trip a while back. I didn't think our tent and everything was going to fit, and it was funny to see that little car packed completely full. It pulled it off though!
Pros
The top things are the mileage it gets, the torque and acceleration I get from the engine, its stopping distance is incredible, and I love the seat warmers in the wintertime. Overall, it is really comfortable to drive, and it is perfect for being a commuter car.
Cons
I would say the fact that it is a German made car makes getting parts replacements rather expensive at times. We got our tires replaced a while back, and the tire folks forgot to give us back our tire lugnut key. Even though it was only a year old at the time, Volkswagen had made that particular key obsolete, so we had to get a full replacement which was around $200, just for 4 lug nuts and the key. Also, there was an issue with the air compressor for the AC unit which needed a replacement, so it was a little faulty. If we hadn't bought the added maintenance coverage it would have been ver... I bought my car new in 2011 and am planning to sell it now hopefully this year (2015). Mine was candy white and a 2 door. At the time this was the car I wanted and don't get me wrong this is a great car. I just want something different at the point (something faster and with a manual transmission). Anyways, the Golf as well as all vow's are extremely customizable and have a huge cult following behind them. I did this with my car, put about 7000 dollars worth of upgrades on it and the car looked amazing. As far as the reliability of the car, so far so good. I like the fact you can get the golf in either a 2 door or 4 door. I think VW was lacking big time in technology at the time I bought my car though. No Bluetooth, no multi function steering wheel. No armrest either which was kind of ... (more)
