Appreciate the durability and strength of the car
I have a 1997 Ford Contour I purchase about a year ago from a private owner for around $1,100 dollars. Overall, it's been a reliable vehicle and has gotten me from point A to point B. There have been a couple minor issues that we have had to fix along the way, but nothing major. The biggest issue that we have had to deal with is the engine overheating. Luckily, we were able to attach a toggle switch to the fan, which allows us to control when we need to turn it on. Besides that, it has been a relatively comfortable vehicle and is durable enough to handle two small children. Of course, I wish it had more room, but for being a 4-door sedan - I can't complain! I have definitely gotten my $1100 out of it that I paid for it.

Contour Can't Handle Long Drives
The Ford Contour Sport is not a car designed for long distances. The transmission completely blew within 60,000 miles of driving it. I bought this car new, and it almost made me completely lose my trust in Ford. Not only did I have engine problems almost immediately, but this compact car was almost too compact. There was no leg room in the backseat for passengers, unless the driver and shotgun rider were pressed up to the windshield. The trunk was also quite small-- too small for even a couple of sets of golf clubs. Also, the paint job of the car dulled quite quickly and soon went from a shiny gold to almost a dull tan. I treated this car well, had all the routine checkups and oil changes, and it still was completely below my expectations. Cars should last more than 60,000 miles no matter how little they cost! I wouldn't take another Contour--- even if someone gave it to me, for free. I certainly wouldn't want any of my children, friends or family driving it for any reason.

A beater, but with some character.
It's been a good gas saver for me for the last couple of years, with it's downs and ups. It was cheap and mostly reliable, but it did have a few points where it was in the shop.
