It's extremely reliable so far. The dashboard is very simple and easy to use. The car isn't complicated and doesn't have endless feature, which can be nice. It is decently fast when needed. It could ride a little bit better as sometimes it gets sort of bumpy. The headlights are sort of dim, which can be frustrating. It has plenty of cup holders, and the seat is easy to recline and adjust. All the mirrors are adjustable so that's nice. So far it's performed really well at almost 40K miles. I'd certainly recommend it to people who are looking for an easy car to drive. It isn't flashy or anything. The A/C in the car works really well. Plenty of leg space in the car. It has five seats total in the vehicle. It has lots of room for luggage in the back of the car. You can also use that space ... (more)

It drives really well. Has great turn signals. All the seats are adjustable, which is great. Plenty of room in the gas tank for a nice drive. Great commuter car. The A/C works great. Turns on a dime, which is nice. Car sits up decently high. You aren't low to the ground while driving. You never feel too low to the ground, which is nice. I'd probably recommend it to anyone. It has a decently sized gas tank, around 14-15 gallons. It seems pretty safe so far. It isn't large or anything so you won't have too much trouble parking it. It has five seats total in the vehicle. It has lots of room f... (more)

It can be a bit bumpy sometimes while driving. The gas tank could be a little bit bigger. The headlights could be brighter or better. The headlights are sort of dim, which can be frustrating. The dashboard could have better technology—like GPS. It isn't a flashy car at all. It won't drive too fast, and it doesn't drive too well in snowy weather. It can't tow other vehicles. It has limited features. The car can be a bit loud sometimes while driving. It can be slow at accelerating sometimes. The sound system can be bad at times and not sound too great. The speakers do get loud so that isn't ... (more)

At the time I bought it in 2006, this vehicle gave the best mileage for the amount of gear you could stow in it. I have variously loaded this vehicle with kayaks, bicycles, a topcase, and tons of scuba and camping gear, and the mileage doesn't really falter. Generally the mileage averages out to just a little north of 25 mpg. The handling seems smooth to me and I am pretty comfortable driving it. I have never had a serious mechanical problem with this car. It is a little strange when the hybrid engine shuts itself off and on again, and sometimes I am not sure if ignition is on...!
Historia
This summer, when I went hiking along the coast, I laid the cargo area half-flat and camped out in the back of the vehicle on an air mattress. I just showered and ate at campgrounds and picnic areas.
A Favor
I like the amount of mileage I get for the amount of room this vehicle gives me. I like that I can view my real-time mileage on the display, and that I can determine how much further I have to go (and how long it should take me) via the GPS. Best of all, though, is that it tells me how many more miles I can drive before running out of gas! (Fortunately, whenever it hits 0, there is actually still a little bit of gas left. Don't ask me why I know this.) I really love that the cargo area can be laid flat (or half-flat) and has just enough room for me to stretch completely out and sleep o... (more)

The thing I hate the most about this car is its towing capacity, which is only 1,000 pounds. I have been extremely limited in my ability to tow what I would like, as the vehicle cannot handle an enclosed U-Haul or small camper, or a hitch-mounted motorcycle carrier. Sometimes the check light comes on and I have already checked this out (there is apparently a solenoid that doesn't close all the way) and it can't really be fixed, so I just have to wait for the light to mysteriously go off again (sometimes it is on; sometimes it is off). Although the factory GPS has been useful, it is of... (more)

I really enjoy my Ford Escape Hybrid. I bought it from a small dealer after my last car was totaled when a tree fell on it. At first I was worried after reading that the batteries in hybrids can go out leaving you out of luck. Fortunately for me the car is now over ten years old and is still running smooth. It had one recall when I first bought it, but Ford fixed the issue for free. It has all of the perks of a large SUV without the huge carbon footprint. I can fit all of my camping and outdoor gear in the back or even sleep in it if I don't feel like pitching a tent. The miles per gallon is reasonable considering its size. Since it's a hybrid though, the car struggles going up hills and does not speed up very quickly. Speeding up quickly makes you feel like you're putting too much wor... (more)

I took this car on my first solo camping trip. As a young woman, I felt more comfortable sleeping in my car that night than in a tent. I camped in Sequoia National Park in California. I remember sitting in the back with the back hatch open. I watched my fire burn as I wrote in my journal.
A Favor
I really enjoy the size and the MPG it gets for its size. It's the perfect car for me as I like road trips and camping.
En Contra
Doesn't have much "oomph" when going up hills or speeding up quickly. The interior rattles a bit as well.
