I have really enjoyed having a 4Runner. I wanted a large SUV because I like large dogs. My Bernese Mountain Dogs and Newfoundland have plenty of room to spread out in the "trunk" of the SUV. When I lay the seats down, we can go on really long hauls. The original floor mats that come with the vehicle won't stand up to dogs and dirt though, so we did replace those with WeatherTecs. The dogs LOVE hanging out the back window, which rolls all of the way down Performance: My family members who drive the car say it rides rough. However, for its size, it has good pick-up-and-go and sensitive braking. Practicality and Comfort: Not a luxury vehicle here. It's seats are not that comfortable - they seem narrow and only good for people with narrow butts. Overall, this is a workhorse SUV th... (more)

The dogs LOVE hanging out the back window, which rolls all of the way down, as we ride around town. We have one street in particular that we go down everyday near the same time and there are always children playing outside. We don't know them... but they love pointing and waving to the dogs as we go by.
A Favor
Large interior trunk capacity Back window rolls all of the way down Reliable Practical Hauls a lot of stuff
En Contra
Uncomfortable seats Rides rough

I purchased this car used in August of 2014 with 142,000 miles, and as of January 2018, it currently has 222,000 miles. This has been one of the greatest cars I have every owned. I am an avid surfer and skier who resides in Southern California, and the vehicle is perfect for hauling surfboards and camping gear up and down the coast or snow gear up to Mammoth Mountain. I am particularly impressed with the reliability of this vehicle, especially since I purchased it with so many miles. I perform all the maintenance work myself, and since purchase, have only changed the oil every 5,000 miles, changed the break pads once, put new spark plugs in, got new tires, and replaced an alternator. The car continues to feel and drive great.
Historia
I was off-roading near Mammoth Lakes, CA, and was on a gnarly back country road (maybe 10 miles away from anything) and pulled a full-size, lifted F-150 from a creek bed. The guy was so grateful, he gave me a 12-pack and $20. It was pretty cool.
A Favor
The stock off-road capability (my vehicle has 4wd). The ride quality compared to a truck, still rides a little rough because of the body on frame construction, but not as bad as the same generation Tacoma, Frontier, Colorado, etc. The overall reliability. Sliding rear window -- this is fantastic for getting gear in and out of the vehicle easily. That it can tow 5,000 lbs. I have a small 18' boat which I am able to tow with this vehicle.
En Contra
The average gas mileage. It's pretty bad. I average about 19 MPG on the highway driving 75 MPH. But it's all about smiles per gallon. The short wheelbase in terms of towing. I can feel my small boat when I tow it: A full-size truck or Tacoma with the long-bed would definitely be a better tow vehicle.
