Although my VW Golf is an older model, it still gets along just like it was new. It is easy to drive, easy to maintain and easy to love. I have just over 176,000 miles on it and still drive it as a commuting vehicle every day. Even though it has a high mileage, I still get over 20 miles per gallon. I have had very few problems with the exception of the air conditioner, and once the faulty parts were replaced the A/C was as cold as any in newer VW cars. The other thing I like is the handling and suspension. I have no problem going over 35 MPH around a 90 degree turn. The interior is cloth, which is good in hotter states, and is still in good condition. It still gets challenged at stop lights by newer muscle cars, although never any other VWs. The VW Golf has an excellent layout ... (more)
Story
It is a fun little car to drive around town on a weekend night, with the windows open and the radio up. Around Arizona, the only time to go out and enjoy is during the fall or at night during the summer. We take this car out most weekend nights during later summer, after the monsoon storms.
Pros
Smaller two door sedan, easy to park and maneuver. Has plenty of upgrades and add-ons that can be installed to go faster or look better.
Cons
It is a smaller car and can be nerve wracking driving it in traffic with other, larger vehicles.

2001 Volkswagen Golf - Decent car if you like visiting a dealership or auto repair shop frequently.

The 2001 Volkswagen Golf is a sleek, good-looking hatchback that overall is very average in performance. While the car itself looks great, it under performs in many ways. I bought the car used with less than 30,000 miles on it. Everything was great in the first two months or so. The air conditioning was cool, the brakes worked well, it handled great, and overall was a decent car. Then the problems started. First, the brakes needed to be replaced. 45,000 miles into this car and I needed a full new brake replacement. Then the air conditioning stopped working, and living in Texas, this was not an option. After that, it was small things like windshield wipers, etc. After I got the major problems fixed, it was a decent car. It got me from point A to point B. However, I felt like I spent way... (more)
Story
I drove this car with my then girlfriend, now wife, on our first road trip to Austin, TX. It was a great trip. We even camped out in the car with the back seats folded down one night.
Pros
Handled well. Great sound system. Plenty of room.
Cons
Problematic brakes. Problematic air conditioning. Headlights were never bright enough.
