I purchased this car as a demo model from a Volkswagen dealership with 5000 miles on it. It now has 225,000 miles on it and, other than regular upkeep, I have not had to make any repairs and it is still running well. It is powerful for a small car, and the gas mileage is great. I drive it in the winter and on dirt roads and it handles well. Even with a manual transmission, I haven't had any problems with the engine despite the high mileage. I think it will still be running for a few years.
Story
I drove my car throughout my attendance at 5 different universities. It has been through a lot.
Pros
I love that it is a manual transmission. I love the gas mileage, about 24-28 miles per gallon. The back seat opens up to the trunk and provides enough space to haul larger items, and the cab is already quite spacious. I hardly have any trouble with maintenance. The safety ratings are HIGH and my insurance is low.
Cons
When I do have maintenance, it is expensive. Headlights and oil changes are more expensive than they would be for an American vehicle. The seats are operated by crank, instead of a lever. It takes forever to adjust the seats. I don't have an auxiliary jack (mp3 player), even though it was made in 2006. Seems a little outdated. There is a skid plate on the bottom that has to be removed for oil changes. It takes twice as long for that reason. My electrical system shorted early on, and my lighter/cell phone charger jacks haven't worked since. The wheels are small and it came with hubcaps i... (more)

I purchased my 2006 Volkswagen Jetta in 2009 and I paid for it in cash. It was used when I first bought it and it had 66,456 miles on the odometer. The body was in great shape and it had no visible scratches and absolutely no rust. The inside of the car was kept in very pristine condition. I currently average driving around 500 miles a week and I usually only have to fill up about once a week. On my odometer it says that I average about 28 miles per gallon in the city. On the highway I average about 32 miles per gallon.
Story
One time I was driving on the highway and I raced another Volkswagen and it was very enjoyable.
Pros
I love this car because it is a very light car that is very easy to handle and drive throughout your everyday commute. I think that the body style on this car is very sporty looking which is exactly what I wanted. The engine on the car offers some serious power and speed for the size of the engine. I think that this car was a steal for the price I paid for it at $6,000. I will most likely buy another Jetta when this one finally gives out and I would recommend this car to anyone who is looking for a great first car or everyday commuter.
