The Volkswagen new Beetle is a revival of the classic model. Not as inexpensive as the original; it is still very affordable. Mine is a diesel, which is always fun because it raises eyebrows when they hear a cute little Beetle rumbling like a big truck. It is fairly responsive once you get used to how it drives. There are no problems with how it fits into parking spaces, which is great fun compared to the oversized trucks and SUVs so many other people tool around in.
Story
I was in a parking lot, waiting for a friend to return from the store. It was cold, so I had the engine on to keep the heater running. A man passing by stopped to stare at the car for a while and finally came over. He motioned, and I rolled the window down. He wanted to know if it was a diesel, sounding very surprised. It is, and he didn't know what to make of it.
Pros
As a diesel, my Volkswagen new Beetle is very fuel efficient. I regularly get in excess of 40 miles per gallon. That's a huge plus with fuel prices where they are. I like how it handles. As a small car, it zips around curves and hugs the road quite well. It's also very fun to watch the reactions of people when they see them; it's a car that stands out more than most because not as many people have them.
Cons
As a diesel, the Volkswagen new Beetle requires a bit of knowledge to drive responsively. Maneuverability is fine, but there can be a bit of a delay in power coming up when you press the accelerator. Once you're used to this, it drives quite well, but it can take some getting used to. As a small car, it is also not the vehicle for people who want to haul a lot of cargo or comfortably pack people in. It seats four, but the backseat passengers will be a little cramped.

This New Beetle was my third WV Bug and probably my favorite. It had decent power when driving and had no real mechanical issues except an A/C relay switch once in spite of it having around 51,000 miles on it when I bought it and over 180,000 when I let it go. It was still running strong but due to the miles I drove daily I took over my husband's WV Rabbit which had a lot less on it. I still see it driving around town today, three years later. The New Beetle had heated seats (wonderful in Michigan winters) and a sunroof. With regular oil changes and checkups, it ran great the whole time. There were a few minor problems such as the seal on the trunk of the car and ice buildup behind the front tires but all in all I loved this car and still miss it to this day.
Story
This was after I traded the car in. My husband and I were driving in town and saw my New Beetle parked at my sister's place of business (it had distinctive marks on it). I went in and asked who owned the car and told them that I was the previous owner. They loved the car also.
Pros
My favorite features had to be the heated seats and the reliability of the car. I never had to worry that it would not start or would break down on me, in spite of the mileage.
Cons
The biggest cons with this car was the difficulty of working on the engine (hard to get to certain parts) and the seal on the trunk of the car causing it not to lock down at times. Icy build up behind the front wheels of the car could also be a problem if you did not take care of it before it hardened.
