I love the look of this car, which is the main reason I bought it. I had been wanting a Volkswagen Beetle since before I could even drive. I was lucky to find a used convertible version for around 15k and jumped at the chance to own my dream car at such a reasonable price. I love driving around town in my Beetle, and I put the top down any chance I get. However, after owning this car for 6-7 years, I've had a few annoyances when it comes to regular maintenance. The headlights burn out extremely fast. I've sometimes replaced them, and had to do it again just 6 months later. In addition, I've had small issues with the electrical. Some of the power window buttons stopped working, the trunk button stopped working, and there's no option to open it with a key from the outside. The gas cover ... (more)
Story
My daughter, who is four, asks me to put the top down, and wants me to blast "Let it Go" from the CD player every time she's in the car. We both put on our sunglasses as we drive down the country roads by our house, and she thinks Mom owns the coolest car ever.
Pros
Look of the car. Fun to drive.
Cons
Electrical problems. Small trunk space.

2009 Volkswagen New Beetle - Looks great on the outside and inside, just as long as you don't need it to be reliable.

I really had high hopes for this car. I am a huge fan of VW in general. I've owned a lot of cars by them in all sorts of different models. However when it came to the new Beetle, I was greatly disappointed. It looks great, it really does, but when it comes down to function, I was let down. It gets decent gas mileage, but you shouldn't abuse it as a daily driver. You can't haul virtually anything in it, including people that are adult size. My particular car just ate batteries to no end, and really made my Monday's more difficult than need be. Granted, I did buy it used, for a pretty penny though.
Story
I had to fit my very large male friends in the car one day. They're all about six foot tall, and thin, but you know, tall. In the back seat there's no room, and we had a three-hour drive to and from our destination. It was like watching lumberjacks pour into a clown car.
Pros
It's a very nice looking car. It has good lines on the outside and a very attractive interior. It has all the automatic tech displays you really need, and they're easy to read and not clustered up in the dash. It's set up nice. You set well inside it, in the front driver's seat at least. It's a beauty to park because it's so small and short, you can always squeeze into and out of that tight space. Corners great, very aerodynamic in the wind.
Cons
I couldn't keep this car running. Every Monday I needed a jump, and when you're a commuter and need a reliable car, this just wasn't it for me. It should have been, but it wasn't. The tire tread doesn't hold well, so I had to replace the battery a few times, tires, do a whole engine redo and it just cost me more money than it was worth because of the way VW engines are built requires extra labor hours. I also personally, don't like feeling that I'm sitting on the ground, and I had a manual transmission that just couldn't get out of it's own way, which was very frustrating.
