I really like our used Volvo S40. The car has a nice solid feel to it that makes going around curves and over bumps comfortable. The factory stereo is wonderful. I can only imagine how it must have sounded brand new! The very nice leather seats, even at this age, have no cracks or rips. The sunroof is a fun feature that we use a lot! It has never leaked even during a torrential downpour. In the past year, this car has only been in the shop for basic things like an oil change and brakes. I count brakes as normal wear and tear. What is there to say that is negative about the car? Not much! I don't like the very strange plastic key, but if that is the worst thing I can come up with ....WOW!
Story
The day I came out and found a family of squirrels in the car is a day I won't forget! I had left a window partly open by error and that had to be the day the squirrels invaded! Thankfully, other than totally destroying a bag of crackers I had left in the car, they did no damage.
Pros
My favorite feature of this car is the solid feel. I feel very safe in it. I also, as mentioned before, LOVE the non-leaking sun roof! This is a car that has never let me down. Freezing cold, the night I forgot the lights on for at least five hours, it ALWAYS starts!
Cons
The only thing I don't like about the Volvo S40 is the fake plastic key. It is just odd feeling and seems cheap and as if it would easily break.

2004 Volvo S40 - Reliable, but expensive to maintain.

This car is fairly safe and reliable, but it does cost more than I would like for maintenance. That being said, it hasn't had any major breakdowns or problems and has done a good job getting me from A to B.
Story
I have driven this car to Vegas and Northern California and had a great time on both road trips.
Pros
Reliable, and even though it is a "sporty" model, it still maintains that Volvo tank feeling. I have taken it on a couple road trips, and it has served me well. If taken care of, it will last at least another 100 to 150k miles.
Cons
The price of maintenance is the biggest con. Pretty basic and routine issues with the car end up costing way more than if I had a Honda or Toyota, etc. Also, it has a turbo charged engine, but has a major turbo lag, which is annoying.
