This car delivers on Volvo's reputation for safety. It's well-built, durable, and mostly reliable. Bought used, though, it came with a lot of issues that resulted in having to replace the engine, the wheels, and many interior components. It was hit in a parking lot and had little damage, while the car that hit it ended up being totaled. It has solid construction and has been a good car for a first-time driver.
Story
Seeing my 16-year-old son drive off in it the first time on the day he earned his driver's license.
Pros
It's stylish, comfortable with leather seats, has a great sound system, plenty of room in front and rear seats, and has held its value even after the extensive repairs we've had to put into it in order to keep it on the road as a daily commuter vehicle.
Cons
As a European car, it lives up to its reputation as being expensive to repair and maintain. It has to go to a specialty Volvo shop, and even for oil change/tire rotation/fluids, it takes $300-$500 at least three times a year just to maintain it as a daily driver. It's driven daily on the freeway, and it doesn't get very good gas mileage-- it's a five-cylinder car.

I fell in love with Victoria ( my car ) the first time I ever saw one on the road. From the older models, to the newer versions, I love the body style. The S60 and the S80 are nice too, but they were just too big for me. The S40 is cute and small and can fit into almost any space. She handles like a beauty, every corner, abrupt stops, having to accelerate very quickly, she does it all.
Story
There was this one great time that I was going at least 105mph going up I85. The car was handling so smoothly, I didn't realize I was going that fast. Then I got a super speeder ticket. Great times...
Pros
The owner before me kept the car in immaculate shape, so when I got her, the interior still looked brand new, the exterior ( and very illegal tint ) looked flawless in its all black glory, the car had been maintained very well, and the only thing I ever had to replace was the suspension and other little things.
Cons
The maintenance was definitely not cheap, and going to the dealership was sometimes completely out of the question. Some parts were hard to come by, so I'd have to wait until they got shipped in from some far away land. Also, they stopped making the S40 in 2011. Very disappointing.
