My Hyundai Accent, in addition to being an economical purchase, is extremely fuel efficient. The parts are really inexpensive and easy to replace when they need to be replaced, and maintenance is pretty easy. The only problem is that some of the cosmetic parts are badly-made, for example the exterior plastic door handles eventually all just pop off from years of use. This seems to be a flaw in all the Accents that I've seen, though.
Story
I tried stuffing my friend's bike into the backseat once in the middle of the night because I was picking him up from somewhere. It took us about 30 minutes, but we managed under the watchful eye of some nosy cop. It was a pleasant memory.
Pros
Handles well; easy to service; gets good gas mileage.
Cons
Door handles and outer plastic parts fall off easily with age; has a tendency towards transmission trouble as it gets older; mine in particular has an oil leak, but that's pretty typical of older cars; also, it's kind of a small car, so you can't fit a lot in it in terms of cargo.

2004 Hyundai Accent - Cheap, that's about it.

My 2004 Hyundai Accent is the base model with the 1.6L engine and four-speed automatic transmission. It was extremely cheap to purchase compared to other brands, and the gas mileage was fantastic at that price point (30mpg combined). Anyway, I have had serious issues with the car since purchase in 2004, and the only reason I still have it is because I've put enough money into it that it is just a back-up car as I upgraded. The 1.6L makes barely 100 horsepower, and you can notice that as you drive, the throttle is sluggish and driving uphill you will always be going under the speed limit. I'm not a speed racer, but when you're constantly getting passed by people in Prius' or Corollas, you know there might be a problem. On top of all of this, I went through two head gaskets with this car... (more)
Story
Driving from Miami to Central Florida and just cruising late at night. It was great, the car ran fine and it just felt good to breathe.
Pros
Great fuel economy
Cons
Poor engine performance, high cost maintenance comes out of nowhere. There is not a single power feature on any of the models. Is it too much to ask that in 2004 you can get electric windows?
