The first time I saw the 2001 Kia Rio, I realized that Kia was set to become a greater car company that it currently was. As most people know, they licensed the Mazda 323 and turned it into a Korean car in the early years of the model. As it was near the beginning of the production cycle, I was able to allow for the fact that there weren't a lot of additional features. The car was inexpensive and got good gas mileage. Those were the most important things. In addition to that, the handling proved to be equal to the Corolla and other cars in its class. The gas mileage was also routinely around 30 on the highway, which made it quite inexpensive to operate.
Story
We took the car to the Wallowas and were able to spend about half the money that we normally do for gasoline. The guests that we had appreciated the fact that someone cut us off on the interstate, but because our car was so short, they completely missed us when they entered our lane. The car toured well overall.
Pros
The car was able to handle well and get great gas mileage. The substandard-size engine actually output more power from an end-user perspective than many cars with more CCs in their engines. The brakes were quite strong initially. One time, I almost hit a deer and was able to hit the brakes without skidding, allowing the animal to escape.
Cons
Although the handling was good, the handling in snow and black ice was not as strong as competitors like Subaru. The main reason for this is that the car was so light that if it started to slide, it would be hard to get it to right itself. For this reason, one night my friend accidentally hit a house. She hit black ice on a corner and apparently ended up 'tapping' into the bedroom of the owner. Rather than blame the car, I ended up looking at her inability to drive under the worst conditions. So we went out and trained until she felt comfortable avoiding houses on her own.

My Kia Rio fits me very well; it's tiny and cute. It runs great, and as far as mechanics goes, it's a champion. Mine is almost at 200,000 miles and running strong. As far as electronics and basic function? Not great. Three times in five years I've had to replace the multifunction switch, and the door latches are hellish. If they aren't stuck, they are just full-on busted.
Story
Moving across states with everything packed into this little tiny car. I had no A/C, two massive dogs, and a U-Haul trailer hooked to my tiny Kia. We were driving across the 110-degree desert, and it was so hot we were probably delirious.
Pros
Strong clutch, it's adorable, it runs like a champion! It cleans up really nicely! It will get you across the country for a steal of a deal and virtually nothing will go wrong on the way.
Cons
That darn multifunction switch and the other basic functions like A/C, door latches, locks, etc. Seems like every time I fix something, another thing breaks. But it's never serious like the tranny; it's always really simple stuff, like headlights or brakes.
