The VW Passat is enjoyable to drive. Sometimes described as the "poor man's BMW", the Passat lives up to this description with tight handling and quick pickup. The Passat drives like a much more expensive vehicle, hugging the curves and responding quickly to the accelerator. It is a smooth drive. Be careful, this means it is easy to go faster than you might think you're going! Repairs for this car, however, tend to be expensive. That includes normal maintenance costs, like brakes and exhaust. The catalytic converter is especially expensive, over $1,000 with parts and labor. That's unfortunate since the car has a dual exhaust. The good news is that it doesn't need repair often. However, when routine maintenance is required, it tends to be pricey. It is worth seeking out a mec... (more)
Story
Both of my children learned to drive standard on our Passat, and it was a great car to teach them how much fun driving a stick shift can be. They both came to understand how much more fun it can be to drive a stick shift, especially when you have a beautiful road to let the Passat engine stretch out a bit.
Pros
The best things about this car are the great handling and how quickly the car accelerates. My favorite feature is the sun roof.
Cons
The biggest negative is that the car is very expensive to repair. The powerful engine requires a dual exhaust, which is particularly expensive to upkeep.

Volkswagen Passat is a standard sedan, with slight European styling. It has ample space to make it comfortable for long trips, but it is not a gas guzzler, so it is efficient around town. Volkswagen stands behind their product and offers a meaningful warranty - but I didn't have much cause to use it as the car performed well with very few issues other than standard maintenance. People are always surprised when I tell them the car is a 2009, because it looks great.
Story
I had some of the most special conversations with loved ones in this car. There is something about a long car ride, or a ride at night with the windows open that just open you up and allow you to pour out your heart to a loved one.
Pros
The car handles exceptionally well. It is big enough to make you feel safe, but small enough to make you feel like you can move easier than the world of SUVs around you. The fuel efficiency is remarkable and adds to the allure. The car has a sporty look to it, even though it is a classic sedan, it doesn't feel like a "family car".
Cons
I had serious issues with the add-on navigation and Bluetooth system. After a few years the system died and without paying hours of diagnostic labor charges - no one knows what the issue is. Volkswagen should have stood behind the navigation system it chooses to install in their cars. Also - everything for Volkswagen is just a little more expensive than a Honda, Toyota, etc. Expect to pay a little more for oil changes, tires, wiper blades, etc.
