1999 Dodge Dakota - Love My Truck
I have been driving this vehicle for over 15 years and have had very little trouble with it overall. The quality of this truck is superior to any I have owned before, and when it is time to replace it, I will definitely consider buying another in the same line. While it is not exactly the ideal vehicle for families or those who commute long distances in traffic, it has served me and my family well. It has outlasted every other automobile we have ever purchased and has been the "reliable stand-by" during those times when our second auto was in the shop. In fifteen years of service, I have only had to have major repairs performed once, and it was covered under warranty at the time. As long as I change the oil and spark plugs on a regular basis, and keep the fluids filled I have no seriou... (more)

As long as I change the oil and spark plugs on a regular basis, and keep the fluids filled I have no serious problems. It is coming up on the 300K mile mark, and barring the occasional check engine light (when it is time to change spark plugs), it still runs as well as it did when I drove it off the dealership's lot.
When our oldest child was very young, we traveled to Disneyworld in this truck. It was not the best experience for us, as it rained the whole way there and we ended up having to move our luggage from the bed to the back seat with the child, but it got us there and back with ease, and we enjoyed the experience very much. My favorite feature of this vehicle is its compact size. I needed a truck in which I could haul things for work when necessary or run yard debris to the landfill, but could also navigate well in tighter areas. Living in a semi-rural part of the state, the size of one's vehicle isn't usually a problem. However, when I have to go into town to do any shopping, the parking spaces are so tiny that pulling a full sized truck into one would be impossible. Not a problem with my Dakota Sport! Some of the other features I like are the many interior compartments, the smoothness of the drive (it's seriously like driving a car), and the fact that it is relatively low maintenance. Keeping the fluids filled, changing out the oil, and having an annual tune up are generally all that is required to keep it in good running order. I also like the fact that when it is time to have new tires installed I rarely have to wait for them to be specially ordered from a dealership. They are always in stock at my local mechanic, and the changeouts do not require special tools in order to be completed (which also saves me money on labor).
I personally don't consider this a negative, but I can see why some people, especially those with larger families, might: the interior is fairly small. It is not a vehicle that is meant to transport a lot of people or items that can't be put into the bed of the truck (like groceries, for instance). As the truck ages, the electrical system can get a little hinky and start showing indicator lights when there is no problem. As the truck ages, the electrical system can get a little hinky and start showing indicator lights when there is no problem. However, this is usually easily fixed by changing out a wiring harness or changing a couple of fuses. My only other complaints would be purely cosmetic or aesthetic in nature. I am not a fan of the material used to pad the running boards, as they tend to suffer from dry rot over time, especially when you have no garage and have to keep it parked outside in the southern heat. The same can be said for the material covering the dash and the consoles. They tend to crack and/or peel over time. While it may not be an issue for those in cloudier/cooler climes, it's definitely something to be considered if you live in a warmer and sunnier part of the country.
1999 Dodge Dakota - It's rugged, has a ton of miles and runs strong.
This Dodge pickup is a monster. It has a powerful V8 engine and is four-wheel drive capable. Within seconds, it can go from a two-wheel drive pickup to a four by four monster. My current truck has over 220,000 miles, yet it drives like I just pulled it fresh out of a dealer's lot. It has a six-foot bed which fits pretty much anything in it that you need for any type of work you do, whether it be home improvements or for the job site. Even having the bed loaded with gravel from front to back, the truck performed at a five-star level. The transmission is what people question the most on pickup trucks. However, I must say, this truck's transmission, still to this day, has never slipped or caused me any issues what so ever. Dodge made a keeper on this model pickup. From top to bottom this ... (more)

From top to bottom this truck passed every obstacle I have thrown in its path. To anyone who plans on purchasing this truck, keep in mind, you may never judge another pickup the same way again!
One day I decided to go off-roading in my truck. It was raining out and I decided to drive up a hill which at the bottom had a river running along the side of it. I started to slide down the hill toward the water. I quickly shifted into four-wheel drive and before you know it, I started making my way back up the hill.

The Dodge Dakota pickup has a beautifully built 5.2 liter Magnum V-8 engine. Man, Magnum is the perfect word for this baby. The second you put your foot on the pedal you feel instant power. My particular truck is purple and is now known as Purple Thunder due to the rumble of that Magnum once the pedal is to the metal. Besides the wonderful engine, it has a near perfect transmission built in. The two work hand in hand with each other to make this truck not only powerful, but also a 4x4 beast. So between the engine and the transmission, this truck has top notch features that work hand in hand to make it one of the, if not the, most complete pickup truck of its time.
Dodge made a top notch pickup truck with the 1999 Dakota 4x4. Although the positives outweigh the negatives by a landslide, there are still some spots for concern. Gas mileage in this truck is by far its lowest grade. My truck has the automatic transmission built in, however with the manual transmission you may receive better results. While driving in the city you get about 12 miles per gallon on a good day and while driving on highways about 16. Now that number can vary depending on tire pressure, tune up, mileage, and so on.
